Joe Fugate flew into Grand Rapids on Friday for the National Train Show - and since he hadn't seen Bruce Chubb's SVOS since it was an empty basement and a plan just prior to the Valley Forge Convention in 1993, we went over there on Saturday evening.

Bruce gave us a tour of the layout from beginning to end - I still think it's a bit sobering to realize that most of Joe's Siskiyou Line is modeled in one stretch of the SVOS.

Les Halmos went immediately to the business of running trains. Here he gets initiated in the mysteries of running a train through the hidden (it's around 7ft up) staging in Dunsmuir - the panel on the left includes indicator lights and turnout positions, and the one on the right is a multi-camera view of the yard and it's approaches.

Joe and Bruce look at the super-detailed Railway Post Office building located at the Brooklyn Yard passenger terminal.

When you lift the roof off you see this:

Then when you lift the building off you see this:

It's pretty amazing.

Bruce Chubbs Layout

Joe : I have an extensive collection of club layout and private layout rolling stock.

Many I purchased and some I have painted and lettered myself. I did up one

of the SV reefers based on a photo from MR (I believe). Unfortunately I

could not find a photo of the car. I probably have at least 60 PRN cars, going

way back as far as one of Witt Towers' cars. Some of the road names seem

prototypical and those that don't  "could have been." I am always on the

look out for logos and heralds of PRN cars in modeling mags so I can decorate

         a car for that pike.

Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St.Louis Rail Group Layout

I can remember when the SVS was only on paper..

...and on display in the LDSIG Exhibit Room.  I had the pleasure and honor to have what was the current track plan for my own railroad next to his.  Mr. Chubb was pleasant and very courteous to this young person (i was only 18 at the time).  It was remembering The SVS's multiple Deck layout that convinced me to build a three deck layout in order to accomplish the mainline length I need, both on the Interim P&A and on the Ultimate P&A Plan.

Thank you Mr. Chubb for continuing to be an inspiration to us all.  I hope someday I have the honor of visiting Grand Rapids so that I might see your layout in person!

SVOS Layout article

No, I won't be doing one.

I think Model Railroader did one a year or two back that took two sections. I really doubt I could improve on it.

JMRI Ops

I shudder to think of what the setup time for JMRI Ops would be on a layout that size - just putting in all of the cars, locomotives, sidings, and yard tracks.

His op sessions routinely run about 100 trains - there is a very long list of the trains to be run next to the entrance. According to Bruce, setting up for an op session doesn't take very long at all - although resetting the railroad after all the "lets run a train around the tracks" operations of the NMRA Convention will require quite a bit of work.

SET UP FOR JMRI OPERATIONS

Jeff,

I will volunteer to do it, retired have computer will travel.  What an opportunity! Two weeks playing with Bruce's layout.

Did my 503 cars and 50 trains in 10 days working about 4 hours a day. Half the time was spent test running trains, what a deal.
