The new Rapido Park Car

skiloff's picture

As Rapido Trains rolls out their Canadian train sets in HO scale, they were also contracted by VIA Rail Canada to produce some cars for VIA to sell as collectables.  This was a pleasant surprise to many of us and I quickly snatched up a couple.  Much to my delight, they arrived today and they are magnificent!  Here are a few photos, starting with Glacier Park:

And Kootenay Park:

You can see, with either a DC or DCC source, the lights come on.  The marker lights and drumhead can be turned on or off with the Rapido wand (magnetic stick).  Here is a rear view shot of the drumhead:

I can't wait to get my Canadian.  Unfortunately, I have another problem - since I'm building in N scale, I have no place to display these beauties.  Winter project ahead...

Can't wait to run The CP Canadian this year

Thanks for sharing that, they look awesome in VIA as well.  I wasn't out at our club when the CP version came into Sudbury for a display from Rapido but I can only imagine what it's going to be like this year running the Canadian.

I just got back in May from my 3rd trip across Canada on The Canadian.  Never was around in the CP era, but I also have never managed to go 1st class and head to the park car.  Luckily of course us cheap coach riders get our own dome, and I usually take plenty of naps up there through the night.

Thanks

Sean

Those are Sweet!

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

Almost makes me want to run passenger equipment.

Appreciating Modeling In All Scales!

Fantastic! Wish Rapido would do more.

Rapido makes the best passenger cars.  As my passenger fleet is all Rapido, I would love to have a pullman tail/observation car in my road name with the tail lamps, lighted drumhead, even a operating mars lamp.

Sadly, Rapido feels offering these tail/observation cars in many roads would be a large financial gamble and not worth the investment due to the fact the market is "flooded" with passenger cars.     After seeing these Canadian cars I think they are sadly mistaken.

Its the price point

Clearly Rapido's passenger cars are a cut above everything else out there, but that comes with a price - a price a limited customer base is willing to pay.  These cars were $100 each.  To make what you would like, the price point would likely be a little higher yet.  Its a tough balance, making these incredibly detailed cars and still having a market to sell them at premium prices and make money.
