Is there anyone out there who uses solely the catenary contact wire as a source of current collected by Pantograph? Both rails wired to same polarity and current pickup from all wheels?
I have pics of my installation attempts...
So far so good!

A whole bunch of trolley modelers do
religiously.
. Not too many in N scale in the US though. Many in Japan and some in Europe.
The rest of the World does it in HO and O.

I see... how do you keep your
I see... how do you keep your copper conductors clean?
Keeping conductors clean?
how do you keep your copper conductors clean?
Make them take daily showers.
I am sure the passengers (even if they are imaginary ) will appreciate this.
Sorry, I couldn't resist this kind of a strait line.

I use phosphorus bronse wire.

The O scale guys now use. . . . .
. . . something called "Lock-Ease" which makes the OH wire pick-up extremely reliable. I haven't tried it personally yet, but It's a apparently an oil-less graphite and solvent mix, so should be problem free.

Lock-Ease
I looked up the TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION on it and it states COMPOSITION: The active ingredients include an aluminum stearate and petroleum oil lubricant, colloidal graphite, water-repellant and anti corrosion additives. The remainder of the composition consists of an evaporating mineral spirits' type vehicle.
So it looks like it does have an oil ingredient. Now I don't see how this product would keep the over head wire clean, lubricated maybe but not clean. Seems to be sold more as a lubricant for key locks than a cleaning product.

Who's John Galt?
no steam or diesels?
I can see a traction layout with all the track being wired to one polarity, if you don't have any connection with steam or diesel lines, but I don't think there are many mainline electrifications which don't share their track with non-electrics. I was wondering what you are modeling exactly which would make this feasible.

Lock-ease
My input was based on the dozens of ecstatic posts (oscaletraction@yahoo.com) by the (almost national) East Penn modular trolley group, who discovered it's effects about a coupla years back. And have been raving about it ever since.

You can run OH mixed with 2 rail
If you use insulated wheelsets on the OH wired electrics. Usual 2 rail rules apply. It's also possible to put simple auto switching devices in the OH electrics to allow them to have their own reverse loops and wyes and still work on mixed DCC two rail systems facing in either direction.

I was asking MonoMetro
Sorry, Andy, I was actually enquiring about the OP. I know you have lots of experience with traction layouts.
