Lately there have been a number of postings in various threads about backdrops, so I thought that I'd start a separate thread to have everyone share theirs in one place.  So if you've got hand painted, printed hybrid, or other style please share some pictures here.  I'll kick it off with some backdrops from my Richlawn Railroad.

This first picture is of a hand painted mural done by a local artist.  The entire mural wraps around the alcove area and is about 17 feet long.

Here's another shot looking back towards the corner.

And a shot looking into the alcove.  The mural isn't finished yet in these pictures, so there are areas that received more painting.

This is a photo backdrop from Backdrop Warehouse in the Matthews freight yard.  I cut away the sky and airbrushed the clouds.

Another view of the printed backdrop.  It is actually "O" scale on my HO layout, but I dropped the print below the level of the yard so the O scale buildings didn't show.  Since this was a "first print" I got it 70% off of the list price.

So, who's next to share?  I look forward to seeing your postings!

Rick

Here Ya Go

The first shot is a scanned photo from an HOn3 layout I built in the mid 80s.  Astute MRH forumers may recognize various details and vehicles from it that still populate my current layout.

Next up is Granite yard on my last layout.  The backdrop here was based on photos of Keddie, CA on the prototype WP.  I didn't take too many photos of that layout, so the few I do have get recycled on forum posts from time to time.

Finally this is part of my current backdrop that's in progress.  The underpainting here will be covered with the final backdrop colors (hopefully within the next few months), and trees and backdrop structures will be added.

Nice

Nice backdrops guys. I'll try and load a pic later, my internet is giving me issues. This comment was originally an attempt to upload a pic but no dice!

Looking good!

Wow!  Very nice work, guys.  Love your lake in that first picture, Rick.
Rob--your scenery blends seamlessly into the backdrop(s).

Here are a few of mine.  I don't have any 3D scenery yet, but here's what I've got so far:

And here's one that's still "in progress":

They're all hand painted with regular craft acrylics on masonite.  The mist effect is airbrushed on using a thinned white craft acrylic.

Looking Forward to More

I appreciate all the photos guys. The next phase of my new layout happens to be the backdrop. I have installed the masonite backing and curved it into the corner, and will most likely order mine from Backdrop Junction after asking Dave some questions. They are having a sale on all backdrops until end of July, if anyone else is looking. Meanwhile, please keep the photos coming.

Best image I could find...

Of the semi finished portion of my old N scale layout. Not a great pic but it's the best one I've got of the backdrop.  This was painted with what I like to call the "less is more" technique. BTW, I'm somewhat of an artist and used to do  landscape paintings as well as other subjects on canvas. I could paint much more detail in my backdrops but I choose not to do so because I like this simple effect.

Backdrops

Before I started on the benchwork for the Hudson and Hartford I had decided to paint the walls of the train room to see if I could do it using soem of the techniques I had seen in use. Her is what it looks like:

20clouds.jpg

The clouds came out OK but they are a bit too large for the N-Scale layout. Besides I think they are in the wrong places as well. The background was painted in 2008 or 2009.

It was a big project

Since my hand painted backdrops cover almost 100' of layout, I put them on my website at:

Re: Bill Michaels

Your backdrop reminds me of the Olympic Peninsula in WA state, or maybe the north Cascades - southwest BC area.

Geared

A shot of Camp 2 facing

A shot of Camp 2 facing east. The glare to the right of the picture is the sun coming up,  at least that's what I tell myself. It's actually light from a north facing

window that the backdrop didn't quite cover.

Backgrounds

Most of my background is just blue painted sky with a hint of wispy clouds. I have a few from Realistic Backgrounds. DJ.

This is the backdrop/scenery location I went to work on first. That means when I get tired or bored I go do something else. My first efforts then of "something else".

Fantastic changes! From the ground to the trees all the way up to the clouds you have really upped your game. Well done.

Here's a few shots of my little layout that show the backdrop.

I found a couple of backdrops

I found a couple of backdrops that puts you in the city instead of Oh ! Look ! There's a big city over there. The city is called Riftin (not so much as Skyrim fame). There are a few more buildings to add but most is complete.
