Crusty Old Shellback

Ok I've taken in what you guys have said. I've done soem redesign on the lower level and am now looking for more input to see if I'm onthe right track. So let me see if i can explain what is in the drawing so that it is clear as mud. Grid lines are 12". Era is around  1930/40 ish. The main focus is the Missouri, Kansas, Texas (KATY) line running N/S and the Texas & Pacific running E/W centered on Fort Worth, Texas. There will be an occasional "visit" by the FRISCO from time to time. I'll be running both Steam and Desiel. I'll run passenger service mainly on the KATY with the Texas Special. I will also have industires for switching. I've incorporaited a loop so that I can have a continous run but not pass thru the scene more than once. This will be a double decker modular that i can move when the garage is needed. I've figuerd that part out already and will post more on my ideas of how to build it in another post.

Starting in the lower right we have the helix up to the upper level. Just to the left is Tower 55 in Fort Worth, Texas. My plan is to have a backdrop to cover the helix from view.  The second line coming out of the helix and and headed to the edge of the bench work represents the East/West T&P. The next line coming out and making the turn to the edge will repersent the KATY.  Where they cross is Tower 55. The other line that goes into the Union Station is also the KATY. The very bottom line that is the first to come out of teh helix will be a hidden track for my return line from the upper right corner. This will give me a full continous loop without going back thru the scenery. It will be behind teh backdrop that is not shown.

Moving left along the lower section you come into union station. In the 1930's, the KATY lines were all stubended in the station as I have drawn. The T&P has a line that is a thru line right next to the station along with a few passing sidings.

In the lower left corner is my representation of the T&P 360 roundhouse and facilities. I haven't put everything in but do have the track drawn. As you leave that area, you head into the T&P yard and freight warehouse. Not knowing much of yard activities, I've done the best I can with my little knowledge. Any input in this area is greatly appricated.

Going around the end of the island, you head into Midland, Texas. Here are my basic industries for switching along with a basic pasenger depot. From there you head on around thru the open secenery and then to the top into Odessa, Texas. Again it's a small town like Midland but has some industries for switching along with a passenger depot. Leaving Odessa is where the big change was made and the line now goes behind the backdrop and returns to the helix. This is where it allows me to run in a full loop but not by going back thru the same scene.

Si let me know what you think. Is this an improvement? Worse? Where can it be tweaked to work better? I haven't started on the upper deck yet but will be working on that next. I've figured out that my max consist lenght should be 3 1/2 feet. That will give me a up to 6 passenger cars with a FA1/FB1 lashup. For stock cars, I'm looking at about 12 cars or so.

My arms got too short so I've switched to G scale. Old steam and early diesel are my choice of loco. Scratch built is better.

Era and Motive Power

If you are modeling the 1930s, you're not going to see any diesels, I suspect your real plan is to model sometime after WWII when some of the diesels were available in greater numbers.  The FA-1 and FB-1 puts you into the post WWII era.

What is that track along the top of your layout representing and where does it go?

Era 1930/40 ish

Yes the era is around the 30's and 40's. Mainly the 40's for the desiels and the 30's for the Steam and buildings/layout as that's the maps and pictures I have that I am using to basis this off of.

The very top track follows the outer edge of the layout and goes back around to the helix. That will be hidden behind the backdrop. That is the track that allows me to run a continous loop without going back thru the scenery. I originall had a reversing loop on the upper right end. Some had stated that a twice thru scenery was usually not good and so we/I figure dout to use this way to get back to the other side of teh layout without going back thru the scenery. My upper deck will have something similar. I did it this way as I only wante dto run one helix instead of two.
