I thought it might be fun to see some digital dreaming.  Sometimes when I get bored (or inspired) I take a photo of a model and see what I can do with it.  Today's exercise had been to convert a Bachmann 4-4-0 into a 2-6-0

Before:

And after:

My wife and I both agree that the 2-6-0 looks better, although I suspect that may have more to do with the shortened stack and smokebox and close-coupled tender than the wheel arrangement.

Feel free to share your own digital bashes, if you like.  I'd love to see them.

The Wheels

Ken, looks great.

I think I'd like it a lot more if the drivers were a bit smaller in diameter. Can you do that?

BTW, what software are you using to do this?

Gimp

Thanks, Bernd.  I'm using Gimp.

Smaller drivers would be doable, but challenging.  It would also be an interesting challenge if I ever wanted to actually build the model.  One thing I like about photo bashes like this is that they give an idea what the real thing would look like.  If I were going to do it, I'd probably use the drivers from the original mode.

Reason I say smaller wheels

Ken,

I have Gimp on the computer but never installed it. Maybe I should. Mmm

The reason I say smaller drivers is the fact that the first driver looks just a little to big in comparison with the boiler, but of course that's my opinion and worth about as much as the screen it's written on.

Ideas are already running through my mind, but just don't have the time to try this out right now. Depending on others pictures.

There's a prototype for everything

I was searching on ebay today and found this photo.  Look familiar?

How about taking the Erie's camelback 0-8-8-0 and changing  it into a 2-6-6-2 camelback for road service?

Erie's 2-6-6-2 camelback

I like it!  Very well done, too.

Not THAT spooky...

The 2-6-0 was developed from the 4-4-0, by simply adding a third driver...the difficult part was figuring out how to let it slip without binding, so that it could go around curves.  Lots of patents on this technology.

Matthias Baldwin himself pretty much declared anything beyond a 4-4-0 or so to be mechanically impossible...
