I've recently returned from holiday. What on earth does that have to do with a (model) train related forum? Well, as the trip was centered in part on an across Africa train trip,  thought folks might have some interest!

The Train

My better half surprised me by agreeing to take a 3 day train journey from Pretoria to Durban, South Africa aboard Rovos Rail, a company that bills itself as the most luxurious train in the world. I haven't been aboard many other trains of this type, so I'll have to take their word for it - but the train certainly lived up to it's billing in our opinion!

They started off the trip by pulling this loco up to the station, for about a half hour of photo opportunities.

Note that this is narrow guage, 3' 6" rails.

While we were waiting, we were amazed at what we saw along the tracks. I have to believe that most railfans do not see this everyday. Look closely near the palm tree.

Finally the loco moved off, and returned - with our train!

After it had pulled up, we boarded, and found our stateroom. Not too shabby!

it included a private bathroom with shower.

as well as an open ended lounge/observation car

and naturally a dining car.

The Trip

The trip included excursions, two of which were why we chose this route. We awoke on the second morning, after a great nights sleep, in a siding with the Land Rover's awaiting to take us out on a game drive in a private reserve.

Almost better yet, was being greeted back on the train afterwards with washcloths and champagne!

Back on the rails, we enjoyed the views of the African countryside.

I know that traveling to South Africa is hard for a lot of folks, but if you get the chance, don't overlook this rail company.

I have more pictures up on my railroad gallery if folks are interested!

Looks Great!

A co-worker just returned from a trip to South Africa and it looked fantastic, too. But a train ride there would be fantastic! Thanks for the pictures.
