The Canadian arrived in Sudbury for the first time yesterday (in a big box carried by Jason Shron of Rapido Trains.)  He actually came out to see our NCE setup, theoretically, but once the train came out of its box, all eyes were on it, and not the DCC system.

Jason Shron of Rapido Trains (right) is trying to figure out our remapping of the NCE throttle he is using, so he can demonstrate the extensive number of functions on his FP9 units.

The 10 car train was a snug fit along the (also theoretical) station platform, but when we run our own version, it will be even longer, so it will be hanging out past the end of the platform when it pulls in.  We really need to get cracking on building the station and Division Headquarters buildings so the passengers have someplace to buy tickets for their ride.

I'd like to report the train ran flawlessly on the Sudbury Division, but I can't.  There's nothing like a long string of 85 foot passenger cars to uncover the problem areas in your trackwork.  Once our own sets arrive we will have a bit of tweaking to do.  The cars themselves rolled very smoothly, and the units ran and sounded great.  The A-B-A set consists of two powered units and a dummy B, but were able to pull the train up a couple of helices without too much trouble.  We will be putting a drive in our B units, so we will have more than enough power for the train.  (We are also planning on commiting various sacrileges like pulling the thing with RS10s and torpedo Geeps...)

Our sets will be Action Red, and Jason said that they would be the last ones delivered, so we will have a few more months to work on Sudbury station.  He said the first run of Block Scheme Canadians is on its way to Rapido now, so people who have ordered those colours will not have long to wait anymore.  Our model of Sudbury has been designed from the start to be able to operate The Canadian prototypically, but up until now there has been no set of Budd coaches worthy of the name.  We are really excited that regularly scheduled Canadian service from Montreal and Toronto will soon be arriving in Sudbury.

Proto Photos

For interest's sake, here is a shot of the real thing. Photo is of CP #2 at Sudbury in 1976, with the train getting split into separate Montreal (train #2) and Toronto (train #12) sections.

Sudbury ON was the only place in Canada where CP Rail's "The Canadian" stopped and switched mid-route. VIA Rail also continued the practice until 1990, until budget cuts caused the cancelation of the Montreal section, in addition to an all-CN rerouting of the train.

Here is a shot of VIA's #2 getting split into separate sections. In VIA years the Toronto section was the larger of the two:

Got the same one

A little disappointed the Action Red will be the last delivered, but I'm OK with it.  At least you have a place to run it though!

That 70's "Canadian"

Forgot about this photo at railpictures.net of CP Rail's "Canadian" switching at Sudbury in the 1970's; in the middle of breaking the train from Vancouver into separate Toronto and Montreal sections.

Several 70's things happening here that might be considered sacrilege to the purists; like FPA-2's paired with FP7's (dual-service RS-10's and torpedo GP9's also powered these trains), late-1940's CC&F streamlined cars mixing with the BUDD coaches, and of course dirty equipment ...let alone the broken numberboard on the 4096.

OK so the original block

OK so the original block scheme is first, and CP Rail is the last. Anyone know where the VIA Rail sets will be in the production line?

Probably Script next

I don't know, but I would guess that Script would come next since there are few differences other than lettering between that and Block lettering, so likely VIA would come after the Script.  The Action Red's stripes are proving to be a challenge, and that's why it's coming last.

A massive yard

Why do I get the feeling that somebody dropped their uncoupling pick in the middle of the yard one day, went out to retreive it, and never came back?

search team?

We haven't lost anyone in the yard yet, but a few cars have gone astray now and then (they were all found eventually.)  The yard is emptier than usual in the photo, since we removed some cars from the tracks near the passenger train so we could get a better look at it.  For some reason the yard looks bigger when it's empty.
