Free-moN in North Eastern States?

Tue, 2012-04-17 07:44 — conrailandrew
Hello all,
I have an interest in joining the Free-moN movement. I really enjoy watching the trains run slowly though the prototypical looking modules. At a recent train show in the area, the HO Free-mo modelers were displaying their handiwork, fascinating me so much that I spent half of the day watching their setup. I have since learned of the N scale equivalent to Free-mo, and have been completely hooked ever since. The only problem is, it seems that the only people that I've heard of using Free-moN are on the Pacific coast. Being situated in central New York, this is a bit out of traveling reach for me.
Is there anyone in the northeastern US who does Free-moN, or might be interested in helping starting such a group?
Thanks,
Andrew

Free-moN is growing!
Hi Andrew,
I know there are several Free-moN groups on the East Coast (though the names escape me at the moment), though I'm not sure about the NE area.
In general, it seems the East Coast is more into N-Trak and One-Trak, but don't let that stop you from pioneering a group!
There's a Free-moN yahoo group that acts as the clearinghouse for national info that you might want to look into.
The Silicon Valley Free-moN started a couple years ago with two guys who belong to an HO club (Silicon Valley Lines) who wanted to run their N scale stuff in a high-quality modular environment.
At the show we had last week we had 5-6 guys running multiple trains over 10+ modules: it was a blast!
Sometimes all it takes is one or two people with some energy to get the ball (and trains) rolling!
Looking forward to seeing your Free-moN module soon!

So, how to start a club?
M.C.,
Thanks for your encouraging post. Starting a group may be the way to go...only how?
By the way, your Free-moN adventure was what inspired me to look into doing this. A great job well done!
Thanks,
Andrew
Is there a hobby shop near by that features model trains?
If there is, see if you can put up a notice on a bulletin board, or see if there might be someone else in the area that would be interested. One of the great things about a local train shop is that it can be a great gathering place for model railroaders.
Thanks!
Russ,
Thanks for the help. There are two or three hobby shops in the area, and I am good friends with the owners, so I will try it out!
Thanks,
Andrew
Where in the NE?
Andrew,
I too have been enamored by the HO guys in my local NMRA division who are doing Free-mo and have looked around for a group and haven't found anything,

Free-moN in NY
Phil,
I am located in the Syracuse area of NY.
I have started a group (not a club, I didn't want fees, officers and all that. I just want to get together and run trains)and if you want more info, feel free to email me though the contact form on MRH here.
Distance doesn't have to be a major factor to join though, there is another person in the Niagara area who is interested in starting a free-moN module as well!
If we are to far away to meet occasionally, consider starting your own group.
Please keep me posted!
Andrew
