Dan S.

I have recently completed a heritage CW44-9 painted in chessie paint.. I liked the end result so much i am considering hypothesizing that the system was not absorbed into csx but seaboard was absorbed into it. So the system Survives into the 1990s.  The unit is fitted with a TCS t1 decoder and runs fibre optic headlights and walkway lights. 1.5v microbulbs for ditch lights. Sorry for bad pics but they were taken off my smartphone as the electrons in my camera no  longer want to hold hands.

Enjoy

Correct Me If I'm Wrong

But, the Chessie System IS CSX (that's where the C and the S in CSX comes from).

IIRC it wasn't "absorbed" it was the absorber!

Regardless... nice paint job on the GE!

Chessie Seaboard

Actually CSX started out as a temporary designation to facilitate the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard System;  it effectively means Chessie Seaboard Combined (X).  Somehow the management liked the sound of it and the name stuck.

CSX

Chessie System merged B&O, C&O, and WM.  Later, CSX combined Chessie System with the Seaboard Lines + other pieces.

I agree:  great paint job, and I like the lighting , too.

Along the lines of what-if paint jobs, Trains magazine, May 2012, pg. 16 has an article and thumbnail side views of 18 heritage paint schemes that Norfolk Southern will do on SD70ACes and ES44ACs.                                            My choice is the Reading one.

Merger Mania

I was living in Baltimore at the time of the merger mania, and I remember reading something about how Chessie Systems promised that each of the merger railroads would maintain their own identity - not unlike the model Appalachian Lines of McClelland, Koester and King.

That lasted almost until the ink on the contract dried!

I've always felt that if someone were modeling the Appalachian Lines in the modern era it should have a moniker such as VMX or ALX or something like that and a paint scheme that equals or surpassed CSX's in drabness!

Another scheme

This is nice also: http://jointedrail.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=75&Itemid=544&vmcchk=1&Itemid=544

But in the end, I just like the Chessie System colors.

Great Job

I would love to read how you painted it,  I have been wanting to do the same for a PRR SD70Ace in tuscan red and 5 stripes (would settle for 1 stripe) but have shied away from it because of the cost of a loco and would hate to ruin it.  (not real confident in my painting skills for this level of detail).

Thanks

Re: Another Scheme

I'm not feeling the love for it!

To be honest, I never really liked the Chessie System paint, and that modern interpretation of it (IMHO) is going from bad to worse!

Great Stuff

I've liked your concept so much I adapted it. I've been following on the Diesel Detailer and it's cool. I just picked up the "Fantasy" ES44AC units from Intermountain in Chessie today. Stick with the "Modern" Chessie idea. It's cool.
