Has anybody tried to accurately model a pre-WW1 era car with railroad wheels in HO scale?  Powered would be nice, but dummy would be good as well.

I found out that my chosen prototype had a Maxwell roadster with railroad wheels on it.  Based on the photos, I'm going to guess it was about a 1915 model.  I'd really like to model it (but where does one find a 1915 Maxwell roadster in HO?), so I'm curious to know if anybody else has ever tried something similar.  I've seen a couple rather toy-like versions (Precision Scale, I believe?) but nothing that looks like a scale model.

Is it just too small to work?  I don't think so, but I haven't even started to figure out how I would actually make it go yet.  I don't even know where i would get the wheels!

Got a picture?

A picture would help, as would the wheel size needed and some overall dimensions

Kemtron made....

.. a 1907 powered Thomas rail car that I understand has been reissued more recently like this:

It's not impossible, but. . .

A scratch mechanism one off could easily cost as much as $100.00 for parts. I'd use a Jordan vehicle body, strip a decent motor for it's armature, add a 1/4 " 14:1 gearbox and 4mm or 4m wheels. Not sure if a decoder would fit in as well.

The Kentrom looks like it has really nice 5 pole skew wound motor. And brass parts would help keep the weight up. Probably worth bidding for an ebay one if it goes under $50.00.

Scale Structures Limited

had a lovely little Ford Inspection Car in HO standard or narrow gauge - kit K129A or 129B.  All metal castings.  It was $7.50, according to the sticker on the box, which says something about how long ago I bought it.  Not powered, though.

Hah!  SS Ltd is still going strong, and their kit SS9120 is the same vehicle, this time dated 1913.  $35.99
