Ok you Rio Grande modelers out there I need some help in finding some more pics of this rotary dumper. The Short Line Gazette only had one picture of it, and then they published it backwards. Here it is.

The way they published it:

And the right way: Notice lettering on car is backwards in first picture. Second picture lettering is correct caption is mirror image.

Any body seen any other pictures of this device. I'd like to scratch build one and could use a few more pics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did a bit of Surfing

After I posted I took my own advice and did a bit of surfing. Found a nice picture of the rotary dumper at the digital Denver Library. Nice picture of it from the other side.

Also found somebody that has prints. But if anybody finds or has more pictures or can point to them that would be nice, Thanks.

Hopefully my first post can

Hopefully my first post can help someone.

Berndt, the original plans are in the Western History/Genealogy Department of the Denver Public Library.  I spent an afternoon in the middle 1990's with Augie Mastrogiuseppie, the late curator of the photo collection at the DPL  pulling prints and having copies made.  i believe I also purchased a number of additional photos of the transfer from the collection.

Now for the bad news. I am not sure if i still have the material.  We completely renovated our house about 5 years ago and most of my train material got packed away in storage.  I have no idea where it's at.

There is a discussion on the NG Discussion forum here with a few additional photos:   http://ngdiscussion.net/phorum/read.php?1,148061,148061#msg-148061 .

HTH,

Thank you Jerry

I found the forum after I left the last post. This led me to the library and I understand they have pictures as you say.

Keep me in mind when you do find those prints and pictures. I think that the barrel transfer could be made almost any size, meaning dimensional, to fit an area. It can also be adapted for different scales. It's seems to be nothing more than angle iron or L girders riveted together.

Ok you rivet counters get ready.

I'm going to do a bit more research on the net and see what I can come up with.

Thanks again for your first post, it's a great help.

Great Project

That looks like a great project, wether to  build it to operate or not. This is the first time I've seen any info on one of these for the Rio Grande. No wonder they didn't have much for hoppers.   BILL

Yes, great project

but, I need more info. General sizes would be nice to know. I see that the towers that pull the "barrel" are square. What would that dimension be and so forth. It also looks like the bracing is made from two angle sections riveted back to back.

I did find out through my search that drawings are available from the library at @ $20 a page and I think there are 40 pages. Mmmmmmmm $800 for the whole set. I don't think so. It might be viable if I was going to make a working model and sell quantities and in several scales, again I don't think so.

I need to study the pictures more, maybe I can find something that helps with figuring out sizes. The other question is do I use plastic or brass. I'd like to make it functional so brass would be ideal. Non-functioning, plastic would do. Reason for that is brass is more solid, although I'm sure plastic could also be used with more bracing.

Anyway, it's a project that's going to need some cooking time. How long depends on what more info I can find.

The rotary transfer was built by McMyler Interstate Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. I did a search on them and found they were quite a large company building all sorts of equipment.

Maybe a source of info

Would be HOn3 Yahoo groups. You'd have to sign up but theres some pretty knowledgeable folks there.I also found photoswest.org,which has a bunch of pics maybe you'll find something there. Also if you know the lenth of that gon. you may be able to extrapolate the measurements of the towers etc.  BILL

Some good pointers

Thanks Bill. I never thought of the gondola as a scale ruler.  Good point.

photoswest.org redirected me to the Denver Public Library. I've already picked over there pictures of the dumper. I also joined the Narrow Gauge Railroad Discussion Forum. I joined that right after I discovered one of the posters was going to have HO drawings made. The guys name is John Vandenberg. That was back in 2001 so I figure that kind of died  out since I haven't seen any more posts from him on the rotary dumper.

I'll just keep looking. Maybe something will come out of the wood work.

Again thanks Bill for taking the time to help out with info.

Glad I could help.

For whatever it was worth. Hope you find some stuff on this project. I have a friend who made the Walthers rotary dumper operate, and also an operating flood loader. He's now making models for the movies. BILL

Just noticed this blog about the rotary dumper. Color pictures exist here, second row. (In case you haven't seen them)

Thanks

A big thanks for the link. Added them to the collection of pictures I've started. I really plan on trying to build one in HOn3 in the future. Already have one tower side drawn up in Autosketch.

The Rotary Dumper

Found the pictures I had lost and reposted them.

In the almost 3 year research I have found lots more pictures of the internet from the information given in this post. Now all I need to do is someday build it.
