Finished up most of the scenery between Hickman Road and Millard Lumber on my IAIS Grimes Line layout.  This is a heavily wooded area on the prototype and I wanted to best simulate the tree tunnel found along the line.

Beautifull lines

I was suddenly taken by the beautiful lines and color of this image.  I could sit and watch trains roll through that scene all day.

The white fascia is perfect! (I'm second-guessing going with black now because of you.)

I'll second Matt's comments.

I'll second Matt's comments. Great looking scene. I love the fascias, sky, trees and the bridge. Maybe a little extra fill along the highway it looks like gaps below the road surface (if I'm seeing it correctly). Excellent work.

Road Work

Yeah I'm still working on the roadway under the bridge.  Needs striping, weathering and blending in.

Very nice!!

This is a great looking scene.

I think what really makes it is the track to scenery ratio, not trying to cram in a bunch of unnecessary fluff. Keep up the great work!!

Agree with the Crowd

I will echo the same - very nice scene. Have you considered adding a bit of color variance to the tree line?

Very Nice Look!

Great looking work! I just hope you weren't planning on painting any scenery on the backdrop!

But, then again, its Iowa! (What was I thinking?)

Tree Line

Thanks everyone.

No plans to paint on the backdrop, however there is a strip of Mirlon to hide the backdrop/benchwork edge and simulate a distant tree line.  You can see it in the far left of the photo.  I do plan on working in some photo backdrops, but mostly at the road crossings.

I'm pretty happy with the variety of color on the tree line, since it looks like Late Summer in Iowa.  Best compliment came from my wife, who's lived in the state for her entire life...

"Yeah, looks like Iowa."

Grimes Line Update

If you listen closely, you can hear the birds chirping...,  James.

Love the look and the feel of the tree line, no need to add more on the back drop (of course here I am also preaching for my own, non detailed tree line painted back drop ).

Question on the Sky Color

What did you use for both the sky color and lighting?  Good results!

I picked what I thought was a strong blue for my layout, yet it still washes out in photography to almost white.  I am betting it is a combination of color and light spectrum / temperature, and would like to achieve results similar to yours.

The scene is reminiscent of some of my rail fanning - great scenery, beautiful surroundings, no train!!!  I can almost hear the crickets and the occasional "clunk" as the rails expand in the warm sun.

Thanks.

Backdrop Color

Milt, The backdrop is aluminum flashing painted with Behr's Nevada Sky. I used twin tube fluorescent shop fixtures with 4100K bulbs. James

Wow

I wish I could cut & paste this scene onto my layout. This has to be one of the most realistic scenes I've encountered on a model railroad. Bob
