So, I know this is not specific to carfloats, but it helps provide some basic idea of the size of walthers carfloat at approx. 40 feet wide and 280 feet long.
For those who like to model ports with scenes such as moveable bridges average size of a barge or a tow will factor into how we model the moveable bridge or how we handle the selective compression.
According to Railfan & Railroad on page 20 of the May 2012 issue, the Galveston, Texas rolling bridge has a channel width of 108' which is considered a navigational hazard.
It was recently replaced with a vertical lift bridge. The new channel width will increase to 310 feet.

As far as commecially available models are concerned, the AHM rolling bridge only provides a clearance of approx. 65 feet and that is for a fairly low profile barge or tow. Of course, unless the channel is lined by concrete or some other material or the modeler placed spans on either side of the moveable section. , the channel would end up being much less than 65' due to slope of the bank.
Walthers has offered a couple of moving bridges over the last decade. The double track swing bridge has a stock clearance of approx. 80 feet which is not much larger than the AHM bridge. Of course features such as sandbars do not help with clearance either width or depth.
So, why is all of this information important? When choosing to model things like carfloats, barges, tows or moveable bridges, one must decide which model anchors the modeled scene? For me, an anchor point would be a larger moveable span with an appropriately scaled barge that could be placed in the scene for both operations and photos.

Why is a towboat called a towboat when it pushes the barges?
The word "tow" comes from the canal age when a draft animal walking along the bank of the canal pulled a barge. As rivermen gained experience with moving barges, they found that, by lashing barges together and pushing them, they could control the barges better and move more of them. The control was especially helpful when navigating the smaller rivers and tight bends in a river.

The standard barge is 195 feet long, 35 feet wide, and can be used to a 9-foot draft. Its capacity is 1500 tons. Some of the newer barges today are 290 feet by 50 feet, double the capacity of earlier barges.
What is the size of a towboat?
Towboats range in physical size from about 117 feet long by 30 feet wide to more than 200 feet long and 45 feet wide. They draft anywhere from 6.5 feet to 9.0 feet. The boat's diesel engine can produce power from a few hundred horsepower to 10,000 horsepower. A few are in excess of that, but not many. The larger boats operated on the Lower Mississippi where the water is freeflowing and wide.
