Have any of you used both the Micro-Mark and Archer rivet decals?  What are your opinions of one compared to the other?

I recently tried the Archer rivets for the first time.  They're stunning to look at, and not quite as mind-numbing to apply as punching each rivet by hand, but the film is so incredibly thin that I found it a challenge to work with individual rows of rivets.  I got it in the end, but not before turning several long rows of rivets into a bunch of short rows and quite a few individuals!

I've purchased some of the Micro-Mark decals, but not had occasion to use them just yet.  The first thing I noticed (aside from the price and the fact that they only come as a variety pack) is that they look larger than the Archer rivets I used.  They're still smaller than anything I can make by hand, but it would be interesting to see a side by side comparison.

Someone Did A Review

I remember seeing a review comparing the two products complete with photos, but forget just where. I'm pretty sure the reviewer panned the MM decals. There was also a blistering "discussion" regarding MM's entry into that particular market, not unsimilar to those regarding MM versus NWSL.

Google should turn this stuff up.

August MRH has a comparison

Our very own August issue has a comparison ... you should go back and re-read the article. Victor gives you the applications where he sees Archer best fits and where MicroMark best fits.

The two products are somewhat different. I too saw the naysayer posts about the MM rivets - I think their criticisms were over-the-top, as if they had an axe to grind. No product is perfect - they each have areas where they shine, and that's how our editorial staff treats products.

Talk about what they are good for, and you can mention the areas where a product is not particularly suited - but don't beat the poor vendor up over it. Sometimes it can feel a bit like the sense of beating up a short guy cuz he's short. C'mon - talk about where a short guy can be valuable and sure, mention the tasks where a tall guy might be better.

But don't beat up the poor short guy cuz he's not the right fit for tasks that take a tall guy - that's just being mean-spirited. That's how we coach authors and staff to discuss products: focus on their best applications rather than dwelling on their weaknesses (you can mention weaknesses, but for heaven sakes, don't go on a rant).

You should find Victor's contrast of the Archer rivets with the MicroMark rivets helpful.

I did that this morning.  I'd forgotten where I had read the comparison, but a quick web search led me to it.  Very informative, and it agreed with my initial impressions as well.  I'm looking forward to trying the Micro-Mark rivets on something soon.
