P2K SD60 question
Wed, 2012-02-01 21:32 — ajcaptain
Can someone tell me how to remove the fuel tank off a P2K SD 60 loco? Need to get at the screws to get the weight off to get at the gears for lubrication. I recall reading somewhere that the fuel tank is held on only with double sided tape and needs to be pulled off.
Also, do any wires need to be cut to get the weight off?
Thanks,
John

Very strong double sided tape...
John,
If they are the same as the Proto's I have it will be held on with double sided tape. You'll have to jiggle it backward & forward to get it off.
Just be careful if there are detail parts on the tank as they can snap off easily (ask me how I know!).
Once you have the fuel tank off don't try and remove the tape to get to the two brass screws that hold on the weight, just push the screw driver through the tape and remove. My Proto's motors are actually held into the frame with rubber grommets not that you mention having to remove that.

Seems like a strange design, considering it is recommended that they be oiled as often as every two months with heavy use. oh, well. Thanks for the info.

PK2 SD50 Question
John -
Did you ever get your fuel tank off? I have the same problem with an SD50 and squealing gears.

Yes
Just rocked it off as suggested. Held on only by tape. I was concerned about the tape holding when I put it back on, but so far so good : - )
