I just wanted to make a few comments about the MRH on Kindle Fire video from the December issue. I think that the ezPDF program you recommended works great where as the links did not work at all in the other program I was using. However, you (Joe) mentioned how annoying it was having the popup verification of every link before following them. You can turn this off. Click the up arrow at the bottom of the screen to bring up the menu, backspace, etc. and chose the menu function. On the far right of the menu that appears, you will see an ... (ellipsis) in orange. Click that and scroll the screen till you see Settings. Under the settings entry, scroll down till you find the Link section and uncheck the first item (Notify Link Before Action). Now it will just go without putting up the dialog when you click a link. The problem I found doing this is that you will often end up following ad links when trying to scroll the page and it will go to them without warning as well. The authors of ezPDF are said to be very good about working on suggested enhancements so perhaps several of us Kindle Fire users should ask them to make that setting into two separate ones, one for internal page changes and one for following external links. I have not experimented with any of the other settings on the Settings menu so don't know if any of those would further improve the MRH mag experience in any way.

I also noted that you said the Mac version of the magazine worked best on the KF. I know that certainly would make for smaller, faster download than using the embedded version which is what I always have used (on my PC and on the KF). But isn't the point of the embedded version that it brings in any extra video or sound so that an active internet connection is not needed for that kind of thing? Perhaps I am misunderstanding what the embedded version really does that makes it different but to me it seems like that would be better as far as letting me have the best use of the mag when I am using my KF away from a wifi connection as I often do.

Also Joe, I found my KF to be very frustrating about slow reactions to button and link clicks and have discovered that I was pushing too hard or too long much of the time and that lighter clicks worked much more often. I have even been able to make the Contents link work without zooming but admit it is kind of hit and miss. There is supposed to be a software upgrade for the KF soon also that will supposedly make it more responsive according to Amazon.

Thanks for a truly awesome publication! And you should know, being able to take my MRH mags with me in portable form is one of the primary reasons I bought a tablet. I am very pleased to see that it works so well on the Fire. I have actually downloaded them onto my regular Kindle Reader in the past but needless to say, it was far from an optimal experience!

Great post!

Thanks for your post - the extra insight is most helpful.

Yes, I am pleased to see that MRH is quite readable on the 7" Kindle Fire screen, thanks to the extra 13% of pixel density on the smaller screen.

In fact, the number two device being used to read MRH is quickly becoming the iPad tablet. Number 1 is the PC, number 2 has been the Mac, but the iPad is overtaking the Mac quickly as the #2 device being used to read MRH. I expect the Kindle Fire, a very affordable tablet, will soon find a strong following as well.

For those who may not know, Model Railroader is also available on the Kindle Fire (same price as paper). We've tried it and it looks nice, but unfortunately, none of the hyperlinks are clickable. Oh well, have to crawl before you can walk, I guess.

But we're not standing still either. We have big plans for 2012 that should keep MRH at the head of the pack as the most advanced, richest digital model railroading publication on the planet - all for free!

We're also excited about some of the articles we've got planned - it's hard to not spill the beans early but suffice it to say, there's some awesome modeling coming.

Fun with MRH on my Kindle Fire

I have updated my Kindle Fire to the December 2011 software release, version 6.2.1 and the screen is more responsive, among other items.  Just for fun, I downloaded Rick's video demo from the December bonus material as well as the other video and watched them on my Fire.  I used esFile Explorer to get to the downloaded file.

Rick, your video came thru just fine.  Be aware, that once your Kindle Fire is updated to 6.2.1, you may never get it back from your wife.

I also read the other comments about how to get rid of the hyperlink prompt for ezPDFreader which should make that App to pdf reader of choice since it appears to be the only one that does support hyperlinks.

Cheers

Bill

Thanks, Bill!

Bill,

I just checked out my Kindle Fire and it auto-downloaded the new OS version and it is much improved!  Thank goodness that my company is providing me with an iPad 2 3G so I'll have something to use!

No joy, at least very little

I downloaded the ezPDF app and installed it. I downloaded the MAC of the Dec issue. Don't know how to open the PDF file with ezPDF. It is not in any of the PDF selections.

I am writing this on my desktop 'cause I can't on the Kindle. I am able to start a comment, fill in the subject but cannot type in the comment field. When I tap it a text field pops up then closes.

The little joy I can report is that the Kindle updated automatically as Rick reported.

Have a safe and blessed Christmas.

Watch our ezPDF video demo closely

Watch our ezPDF demo video closely and we explain how to find and open the PDF.

The download process part of the video demo starts at 4:20, once the download is finished around 6:00, we show you go into eZPDF and tap the All PDF folder and then tap the DOWN arrow to expand the folder and see its contents (otherwise, you will see nothing). Once you do that, you will see your issue you just downloaded. Watch the video closely - expand it to HD if you want to see it really well.

We also show you have to move the issue you just downloaded into a permanent MRH folder location so it's easier to find later. Again, pay very close attention to what we show to make sure you aren't missing any steps.

What happened to the video?

New Kindle Fire user here.  I can download the mag but the hyperlinks do not work.  Did a forum search and found this thread but the video is missing.  Can we get it reposted or the link fixed please.

Thank you,

John

Okay, fixed!

This video is from 2011, so things may have changed, but it should still give you the idea.
