We've opened up a new troubleshooting thread for dealing with any problems people may have with our "bleeding edge" rich media content.

In order to keep the other comment threads clear of off-topic problems people may be having with some part of the mediaZine, please use this section of the forum. If you post a troubleshooting problem elsewhere, it will be moved here to keep off-topic noise to a minimum on the other threads.

One thing early downloaders may notice with issue 1 is the comment threads don't work yet. You may get a "not authorized" message.

Just be patient ... Rome wasn't built in a day. We felt it was more important to get the new issue in your hands first. Give us another day or so to get all the supporting infrastructure in place - in the meantime enjoy reading our premier issue!

We're expecting it to be available for download sometime before 5 pm Pacific Time on January 10th.

Suspended - Exceeded CPU Usage

When trying to load posts/discussion forums I've regularly been getting a grey screen telling me that the site is "Suspended" having exceeded its CPU. Only started appearing today.

A nice problem to have - shows you're popular. It is sporadic and sometimes also applies to the homepage too.

Now I'm no techie, but do you need another dollar in the meter?

None for me

Downloaded with slow DSL in under 8 minutes for the ZIP.  EVERYTHING worked fine - videos, spining parts and all.

GOOD JOB GUYS!!

Regarding the suspended CPU usage

I called our host (Bluehost) and they said they do not offer any more robust hosting, so if we're blasting out the top already, we'll have to move to a new ISP.

Looks like we'll be doing that this next week, so in the meantime, we're doing what we can to tweak performance settings to not blast out the top with the CPU usage.

This means logging in and clicking around on the site may be *really slow* for a while as we work to keep up with the demand ... sheesh!

Kind of problem you like to have, I guess!

Macintosh Issue

When I attempt to view any of the video in Acrobat on my Macintosh it won't load the video and just says buffering.  System details are OS 10.5.6, Acrobat 9.0.

Issue 1 has problems on Macs

Issue 1 has problems on Macs and we're working on them. I hope to release a special Mac-compatible version in a few weeks.

Unfortunately, expert advice we're receiving from others who have attempted rich media PDFs tell us Macs are a problem. One expert tells me they gave up trying to get this stuff to work on Macs - but we have some ideas so we'll test them out first before we totally give up.

One idea is to deliver a flattened version of the magazine with no rich media, and provide the rich media goodies as a separate download that's stand alone and not inside a PDF.

We'll see ...

You might want to fix the

You might want to fix the dash board issue too. When I click on the dashboard link (on all 3 of my computers) it looses my page. It directs me to Chip's article.

After the first 600 downloads, we fixed it.

 Josh,

Further testing of issue 1 shortly after we posted it revealed the dashboard problem - and by the time we got it fixed, 600 downloads had occurred.

We're now approaching 16,000 downloads of issue 1, so the problem only affected the first eager few (don't you feel special?) ...

MRH on a Mac

Here's something I posted a few hours ago, apparently to the wrong place:

Finally, success in viewing MRH on my MacBook Pro.  The Pro has OSX 10.5.6 installed and wouldn't read the download.  It also has Win XP SP3 installed in Boot Camp with Parallels to switch between Mac and XP.  So, without really knowing the details involved, MRH was downloaded to the Mac, converted to PDF, and dragged over to XP while using Parallels to show both systems on the same screen.

Adobe 9 was also downloaded to the Mac, but the file was dragged over to XP before opening.  Then it was opened and installed in XP and, voila!, MRH was readable -- including the videos and ads.

Still can't get any audio, though, so perhaps someone else has ideas?

Flash 10

Okay, I just loaded up, from scratch, a Windows XP Home machine today. I installed Firefox, and Flash and Quicktime, and Adobe 9.... and then tried to read Issue 1 as a test (if you want to test an Adobe install, Issue 1 seems to be a terrific tool for that too).

It didn't work. Said that there was a problem with Flash. Uh huh.

Reinstall (using Firefox (that's important).

No Go.

Uninstall. Reboot.

Install - using Internet Explorer 7. It installs the ActiveX thing.

Try Issue 1. It works.

Apparently Adobe Reader 9 has a problem with using their own Flash 10 player for Firefox.

Or so it seems to me.

Flash 10

Thank you, Jeff!

I followed your instructions

Uninstall, reboot and install Flash 10 using IE7

Now it works, at least for now.

This is a much simpler solution than reinstalling Windows.

Later I found I had lost flash in Firefox, but I installed the addon FlashPlayer again, and now it seems that MRH is working as it should.

Just one more question:

Should there be some kind of sound or comments on Tims videos.

I only hear "clickety clack" on the first one.

Parallel Tracks videos

KnuT - you're getting the same thing I did - sound on the first one, nothing on the rest. I think that's simply how Tim recorded them.

Oh - and I had to go back and reinstall Flash for Firefox later as well. It seem Adobe no longer tries to figure out what you have installed and then installs everything you need in one punch. At least I think it used to do that.

media player problems

Everything works fine for me except the two special windows in the decoder installation article.  Clicking on either of those two windows brings up a message that I need to install media player.  I click  on the get media player button and am taken to Adobe's plug-in site, where I am told that the third party media player needed to play the video in my .pdf file is not available for my system.  (HP laptop withs 2 gigs ram, Windows Vista, Acrobat 9 - full version, not reader.)  I forced a download of the newest Adobe Media Player, which in turn forced a download of Flash 10 and AIR.  Still doesn't work.  I have tried accessing the Adobe plug-in site with both Firefox and IE with the same results.  All of the other video content works as it should. If I remember correctly, I was running Firefox when I downloaded media player, Flash 10, and AIR.  BTW, I also have the full version of CS3 installed on my computer.

Should be Apple Quick Time

Fred,

Those windows should play in Quicktime - go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/- you don't need the version with iTunes, so save yourself a little time and space and move the blue dot down one.
