Art in Iowa

I've been working on a free lanced UP layout set in the NorCal Oregon area.

===========================================================

Well, I've got three industries installed in on the layout...

This is the location of the scrap yard. Located just away from the town, it'll keep the eyesore away from the city fathers. It will also provide 1-2 car loads a session.

This is a shot of the yard in town. At some point, it will be a terminal for the local switch job and the branch line job. I'm going to start laying out the track this weekend. There is also a crossover to be installed as well on the main here so the local can switch. On the back side will be a packing house and a feed distributor. The town will also be behind the mainline.

Here is the last shot, showing the molding mill tracks and the LPG track. The molding mill will have covered loading tracks on the right and woodchip loading on the left. The mill is going to be decent sized, since I don't like small industries!

Another update will be done later this weekend.

Hello from SoCal

Hi Art - I also am modeling UP in California (Proto-freelance) post 1950 in N scale. Area is arid - lower SoCal/Arizona. Small layout (2' x 5') in modules (dominoes) for ability to work on underside on a bench rather than being a contortionist. I take it you are located somewhere around Bakersfield/Taft or below (especially since you railfanned the Cajon Pass - a BNSF).

I am interested to see your progress and so will be looking for more from you, including your "Adventures in modeling" blog spot.

Hey Bill,

Yep, I'm in the Bakersfield area.

The main bench work is competely modular. That way if I want to expand or change, or heaven forbid move, I can.

You might want to think DCC. It's great for a small layout.

My budget

Hi Art. Yes, I know DCC is terrific. I am not ready for the expense yet - too much older DC stuff and, with N scale, too difficult to retrofit. My main loco is a Kato/Atlas U Boat (U25-B) and runs much better than the two F9 locos I have. I decided to build the Stapleton PWM throttle. I have the kit - I just have not stuffed the PC board yet. It does much for throttling and my layout is too small to justify more than one train at a time.
