I have been converting locomotives to North West Short Line code 88 wheelsets, but they don't offer them any more.

Does anybody else manufacture nickel silver diesel loco wheels  (40" and 42") in code 88?

Say it isn't so!

Please don't tell me the current supply at Walthers is the end!

53-372394 40"/88 outside bearing

53-372404 42"/88 outside bearing

53-372414 40"/88 inside bearing is the only one that shows out of stock, unknown delivery

Full list of NWSL wheels for Athearn models

I understand NWSL recently changed hands, but the new owner seems to be interested in keeping and if possible, expanding the line.  For instance, he's investigated providing brass gears for the Bachmann 3-truck shay, which would be most welcome, but is afraid that the price point would be cost prohibitive.  At least he looked into it!

Please, where did you hear these were being discontinued?  The NWSL site is full of news of new products, and no mention I could find of any products being discontinued.

Ithink for the 40"/88 wheel, you can use the outside bearing version (53-372394), and cut off the stub axle end with a moto tool.

Hope this helps!

I tried to order

some wheels at my LHS and they told me these (40" code 88) were no longer available.  I looked at the 2009 Walthers catalog and could not find a listing for them, although I did not do an exhaustive search.

Thanks for your response, Arved.  Let me know if you find out anything different.

Not According to NWSL...

Dave,

I don't know where your LHS guy is getting his information, but the NWSL web site shows them as still being part of their product line (Pt#'s 96000417 and 96000418):

http://www.nwsl.com/Catalog/pg101-pg07-09-v0605.pdf

Their so-called "latest release" page (dated for March 2008) doesn't mention them discontinuing any of their products.  It would seem counterintuitive for NWSL's new owner to drop items as popular as what you're seeking.

Might be a supply issue while

Might be a supply issue while the 'factory' is relocated from Washington to Montana. But years ago, I was told locomotive and freight car wheelsets were the 'bread & butter' of the line that made some more esoteric products possible.

Thanks, guys

Looks like I might have to go direct on this one.  Happy railroading!
