I finally painted my fascia.  I went with flat black, which I think really helps it to disappear.  When I get around to building the valance, I think the layout will really stand out like a display.  the black also looks good with the black computer and black Zephyr case.

Before painting, I spread spackle and sanded all the seams, holes, etc, so that I would have a nice smooth surface.  It's far from perfect, of course, but the flat paint helps hide that.

Painting

It looks great! I did mine in black too and it makes a big difference to the overall look. More pictures as you progress, please.

Looks Good!

Black is an old theater trick to focus the audience' attention on the stage and make the surroundings disappear.  It works best with strip lighting in the floor and a fairly dark layout room with lighting focused on the scenic part of the layout, but flat black is a good choice regardless.

Looks great

Black fascias are my favorite.  Trying to blend the fascia with a scenery color (olive green, CTC panel green, California dead grass tan, etc) seems like it doesn't work all that well.  You still have this big flat area of color that is obviously not part of the scenery. Black defines a nice "edge" and doesn't distract the eye. It frames the layout very well.

You might consider repainting it with a satin finish black paint.  Flat black tends to get scuffed pretty easily and is a magnet for dust, dirt, scenery material, etc.  If you get something on it, it is hard to clean.

Satin clear?

If you want a satin finish, it might be just as well to put a satin clear polyurethane over the top of the flat black.  It would be like spraying dull coat on a finished model to blend and protect decals and weathering and kill the "shine."

Clear finish

I've been thinking of using some sort of clear finish - probably polyurethane.  If I can find some that is flat, I'll use that.  There are two locations where I will be attaching another layout segment to the fascia, and I have never had good results with two painted faces touching.  For that reason alone, I'd already considered a protective clear coat.

I wonder if a spray can of flat clear would work well?  Aside from the fact that I like the defect-hiding nature of a flat finish, I will probably not coat everything (staging yard rails, layout legs, etc.), so having something with the same reflective property as the base paint would make the transition less visible.
