I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and have downloaded the embedded October issue on to it. I am using Adobe Reader 10.0.2 (I think I've got that correct). The problem I have is that the program seems to be some what unresponsive and displays improperly on some pages -- especially advertisements. For example on page 3, the faint outline of the spine car which I see when viewing the issue on my PC is quite dark on the Tab. On page 7, the entire Digitrax advertisement is missing and I see only a white page. This occurs with a lot of the advertisements throughout the issue.

Samsung's site says I have the latest Adobe Reader version, so perhaps that's not the problem. Now, other PDF files I can read without difficulty. MRH is a pretty unique and "up there" PDF technology wise, I think. On the other hand, I downloaded the HD Nick Muff interview and it worked perfectly!

Are there any other Android based tablet users out there? FYI, I find that reading on the tablet is much more enjoyable than sitting at a desk looking at a PC.

Embedded edition

Jim:

The embedded edition uses Adobe's toolset to construct and it's aimed primarily at Windows machines. With some coaxing, you can get it to also work on a Mac, but that's the extent of it.

We don't support the Embedded edition on anything but Windows boxes because it uses so many high-end media bells and whistles from Adobe. Many of these bells and whistles are near "bleeding edge" for PDFs and I'm not surprised these features are not supported on most PDF readers on other devices, even with Adobe's own PDF reader.

I recommend the Standard Edition. It works great on iPads, and it's a much more typical PDF, with the most advanced capabilities being hyperlinks and a few buttons.

Then there's our eReader edition, which is a totally flattened PDF that's just text and pictures - no links or buttons - about as unexciting as it gets - and also about as compatible as it gets. The downside is the eReader edition hyperlinks don't do anything - but you can read the magazine - and most low-end eReaders don't have a very powerful web browser, or have no browser at all.

It looks like the e-reader version is the way to go

Hi Joe:

This morning I loaded the standard edition to the Galaxy Tab. Still having some compatibility problems. For example, the Digitrax ad on page 7 still shows up as a white screen. The black bottom border shows completely. Also the right and left edges have some gray shading. I reference this because it may be of some interest or help.

Then, I loaded the e-reader edition which seems to work with out display problems. I have yet to go through the whole thing, but the problems I mentioned earlier are now fixed, so that should be throughout. I find that putting the Tab into continuous scroll view mode gives the best reading experience. MRH in all cases is "video rich" so I have to give it probably 10 seconds to load up, and about every 5 pages or so it takes a second or so to load up the next few pages.

Using a tablet is a much better reading experience! I can sit in a comfortable chair and I find that I see more detail and linger longer on each page -- more like the paper magazine experience.

For what it's worth, I went back and forth between buying an IPad and eventually the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I have an IPhone and ITunes is not my favorite place. The Tab is marginally lighter, slightly better with screen resolution. The aspect ratio suits me better, too. And, I like the concept of third party applications.

Thank you for your comments,

trouble reading October 11 issue

Hi.  I'm new.  Run the latest (free) Adobe software on a 6-year-old Dell laptop.  I'm really struggling.

The pages jump from

too-small-to-read, ,,,

to OK, ,,,

to great (for aging eyes) ,,, but have to constantly navigate to following column text.

The motion of the mouse over to the right side of the screen, to click on the GoTo NextPage right arrow, often disturbs the degree of magnification.  Or, conversely a simple movement takes me back to whole-page-fits-screen, which is also back to too fine to read.

I have no other problems with my mouse, navigation in general, or other downloaded .PDF files, even multi-page documents.

Help, please.  Thanks.

I experimented with my adobe

I experimented with my adobe pdf reader and found that neither the mouse wheel nor the cursor keys would change pages when the pages are zoomed.

However, if you're not reading in full-screen mode look at the tool bar at the top of Adobe Reader. Among the other stuff up there is a page number  (show current and total pages). There are a couple of arrow buttons next to the page number. Clicking on those did change to the next page.

Another way to deal with the problem (albeit sacrificing portability) would be to buy an external monitor with a bigger screen so you can display the magazine in a bigger window (also making the text larger).

Sorry you're having troubles,

Charlie

Sounds like you're reading the online edition

Yardplan:

Sounds like you are reading the online edition and not having very good luck at it.

Please watch this video and do exactly what it shows. That should get you into full screen mode with the online edition and make it easier to read. Also, make sure your display setting is at least 1024 x 768.
