I recently moved, and in so doing I now have a 16 x 8 foot roofed and sided shed for a train room.  I am both excited and daunted with all the space I now have for trains.

My plan now is to model the Vermont Rail System point to point from Bellows Falls Vermont to Rutland.  I was thinking of doing a 2 foot shelf layout in a horseshoe,.

My current hang-up is designing the Rutland yard.  I dont know what to model and what to leave out.  I want a functional yard with a few industries, but nothing crazy.  I dont want a bowl of spaghetti.  Here is a diagram I found online.  Hopefully it is large enough to read.  On the lower left is the main coming in from Bellows Falls.

The appeal for me is the interchange possibilities.  In Bellows Falls the VRS interchanges with the New England Central.  Just to the west of Rutland, the interchange is with Canadian Pacific.  Just to the south of Rutland in Bennington, the VRS interchanges with the PanAm Southern (formerly the Springfield Terminal and Guilford Rail System).

The diagram of the Rutland yard is attached below.

Any help in sorting this out is greatly appreciated.

Scale preference?

Dear ???

Do you have a scale preference?

I imagine that N scale could have a better chance of "decompressing" this that HO would for the same room area...

scale

HO scale.  My previous layout was N scale.  Happy to move up to bigger trains, especially with the room I have.
