I had the great fortune of spending most of last week in NYC, deep in the heart of Manhattan. While it was a work trip, I did manage to walk up to the Red Caboose hobby shop to take a gander.

Well... I have to say it was somewhat of a disappointment - even for someone like me who is absolutely starved for a hobby or train shop . The place was a mess, which can be fun in some instances, but for me it simply made it impossible to find anything (the image below is blurry on it's own, but you get the idea).

The store owner (I think) was there, and helpful, so I did manage to find a few things, such as...

this great station wagon

and this panel truck from Athearn

Finally, his prices were not the best either, making mail order all that much more attractive. Still, it was nice to be in a shop, even this one, for a change.

I wonder if you thought as I

I wonder if you thought as I did that they were the same company as Caboose Hobbies Inc in Denver Colorado. I have shopped at Caboose Hobbies Inc. and it is huge. It is one of most organized Hobby shops I have ever been in. They have a totally different Logo on their store fronts. here is their URL    http://www.caboosehobbies.com/catalog/index_brief.php

I also have visited the Red Caboose in New York and they are nothing like Caboose Hobbies. I walked into the New York Red Caboose thinking it was Caboose Hobbies and it was a total mess like the photo shows and only 1/5 the size.

If you can ever get to Colorado go to Caboose Hobbies!! Their store is the worlds largest Model Railroad store with a 17,000 square foot store. They even have a virtual tour of their store on E-Bay at  the following url

When I first was at the Red Caboose in New York I thought it was the same company. Then 2 years later I was in Colorado and Visited the Caboose Hobbies store. I thought I had died and gone to model RR Heaven. I'm lucky to have the wife I have because I spent close to 3 hours in their store and spent a small fortune too. My Wife just set in the Waiting area reading Her book and that was after following me around the store for the first half hour and finally said I'll be reading my book over there in the chairs, when your done don't forget me.

Don't Confuse The Two!

I have to agree with Dan, don't confuse Red Caboose with Caboose Hobbies. I live in Denver, and there are a couple of all train hobby shops, but I usually will drive across town to go to Caboose Hobbies. If they haven't got it, it probably isn't made, and the people who work there know their stuff, and what shelf you'll find it on.

The only complaint I have about Caboose Hobbies, is the tiny parking lot, but that doesn't stop me from going.

Model companies on-line

Ken,

I know a few companies not carried by Caboose Hobbies. I am working with 2-3 at any given time. We are working on producing some great models. While most products are steel industry, one I am working on a design for will be heading into a broader segment. I am trying to finish up a kit design that may be part of a subscription series featured in MRH. We have been discussing this for several of our projects on the table. We hope to announce the first series in a couple of months.

Oh, I have no doubt that

Oh, I have no doubt that Caboose Hobbies doesn't carry every company available, but they most definitely carry far more than the average hobby shop.

One of the benefits/drawbacks of the Internet is that a company no longer needs to rely on the distribution channels they once did. Any company can get customers by putting up a good website, and knowing their customer. Eventually that may spell the end of the neighborhood hobby shop. Only time will tell.

Cabeese

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'm not sure how the idea that I was confusing The Red Caboose with Caboose Hobbies was inferred. Looking back at my post, while I don't see anything to indicate that, if I did so, than it was wholly unintentional. Caboose Hobbies is a great business, one I've ordered from before on multiple occasions, but that information isn't relevant to my experience at the Red Caboose in NYC (the experience that I thought I'd share).
