I cannot get to the bonus pages for the June issue. I get this message in Safari ( relatively new iMac):

Safari can’t open the page “http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/sites/all/themes/common/magazine/mrh-2011-06-jun/bonus-extras”. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 303.)” (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork:303) Please choose Safari> Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

Joe Fugate -- do you what this means? I thought the bonus stuff would be available Tuesday when I got the same message.

Safari doesn't like redirects

We use a lot of redirects in the magazine to reach stuff because that lets us build the issue without know exactly where the pages will land until later. It also lets us move things around after a magazine is published and have it still work.

However, lots of redirects is how phishing attacks work and Safari has apparently taken a hard line on redirects in order to stop phishing attacks where a web site looks like your bank but it's actually redirecting to a site that's capturing your info so they can go rob you blind.

It's unfortunate that Safari has taken such a hard line on redirects since it's a common technique by legitimate web sites to make it easier to maintain links.

Here's a direct link for you Safari users.

Joe, in your wildest dreams....

Joe,

In your wildest dreams when you first took on the task of publishing this excellent online magazine did you ever think that you would have to become a computer / software / browser expert???  I hope that you still have time to play with your railroad!  (I'm going to go do that right now!)

Little surprised by your response Joe

Joe and MRH web service people

Since you recognize that phishing is happening and that redirecting is one of the prime tools to possibly obtain personal information, I am surprised that you would support the idea of redirecting at your site, and even more surprised that you think that Safari is doing a disservice by trying to help people to maintain the integrity of their personal information.

Just because the bad guys use it ...

It's a matter of degrees, John. Just because the bad guys use it is no reason to stop using somethig that's good and useful.

I believe Safari has over-reacted. It's a bit like insisting we stop using airplanes because terrorists may fly one into a building.

It's not the black and white problem Safari has tried to make it out to be. There's good uses for this technique too, and let's allow for that.

That's my concern - we let the bad guys ruin it for everybody when we take Safari's approach.
