Cool

Nice to see a run through on the new section Rick. Answered all my questions on how you were tying this into the existing layout. You've added quite a bit of mainline run and switching to your railroad. It will be fun to watch the scenery take shape in this area. Good stuff my friend.

Nice Video

That was a good video of what you have done. Like the inside walls of the lower tunnel and like the locomotive sounds What decoder did you use?

Thanks, Kevin!

Kevin,

I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!  It seems like I can't work fast enough as I LOVE doing scenery and have to keep myself in check so that I don't get ahead of myself.  I'll post additional videos as I make progress.

Outstanding video!

Rick,

You have good video editing skills. It makes your videos very easy to watch. What video editor do you use?

More! More!

Thanks, Don!

Don,

Thank you for your kind words.  For information on the construction of the tunnel please check out my web site at:

For the locomotive sound it is the supplied sound decoder that comes in the Atlas Gold series locos which is the QSI® Quantum System™ decoder.

Thanks, Al!

Al,

You make me blush  I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.  I hope to one day do a video with proto sound and a few "special effects" to spice things up.  For this video I used Windows Movie Maker(tm) that came with my Windows XP (also comes with Vista) operating system.  I use Adobe Premier V6 (an old application) for my more complex projects.  I'll try to post more videos once I've got some scenery in the alcove area.

Rick thanks for the tour, the

Rick thanks for the tour, the track from old RR to new is seamless and thinking back to your concern about the radii necessary to join the alcove was but a glitch in the mind.

Since you have access to your long tunnel I am going to be bold and suggest that you add some LED lights to illuminate the tunnel for the safety the gangers' as they conduct routine track maintenance, then when the chief engineer rides with cabin crew to video the completed work there would be some visual effect devoid of blank background.

Tour d' Alcove

Barry,  I'm glad that you enjoyed the tour!  I like your idea about tunnel lighting; however, I only detailed the first foot of the tunnel on each end.  If I add lights they will have to be dim enough that the camera car can't see the un-detailed tunnel walls!

Nice....

Rich,

I keep seeing these great videos and keep thinking that I need to purchase a camcorder one. Looks like I am going to need to submit some more articles =) I like how you have both scenes from "onboard" and also some wide shots. It looks like you are going to have some great additions to the operation of the layout. It also looks like you are going to have lots of things to write about too....

Possible solution????

Rick,

Take modeler's creative license;

1. warm glow wheat lighting,

2. Make use of your photographs of the entrances, print them onto paper. Enough for the width and length of tunnel for all surfaces, Join sheets cut to height and length then place pressure sensitive double sided tape spots or some other adhesive strategically placed to the back of the paper.

3. Roll up each length so that it can be unwound (like a roll of wallpaper) and horizontally stretched against the tunnel surfaces applying pressure to the adhesive via the access portals.

4. Tunnel detailed  to enable filming.

Cheap? Maybe. Time required? As long as it takes. Effectiveness? You be the judge of the resultant video.

Very nice!

Nice video, good looking layout (even in its' "unfinished state") and I love the music! Also, as someone else mentioned I can't stress enough how much I appreciate your camera work. Too many amateur videos on youtube and elsewhere look like the were shot in the middle of a 9.0 earthquake! I've lost track of how many comments I've posted that go something like this... "If you can't hold the camera still, buy a tripod!"

Happily, your camera work looks rock solid!

Enjoyed

Enjoyed the video, Rick. Great to see how you tied the alcove into the original layout. Should be fun to operate in the new area.

Thanks, Greg!

Greg,

A camcorder can definitely improve your enjoyment of your model railroad!  I'm using a micro camcorder that cost around $60.00.  I'm glad that you enjoyed the video tour - I hope to do more of them in the future as the project continues.

Barry,

Your idea about lighting and landscaping the tunnel is very creative!  I may just have to give it a try - thanks!

Roy,

Thank you for your kind words.  It's fun to make these videos and I hope to add more as I progress in the alcove area.

Great tour!

Thanks for the great video Rick.  The alcove expansion project is coming along really well.  EIGHT FOOT LONG passing siding!  Now you know I am jealous!

Nice camera work with your mini camcorder and a fine job of editing.  The cuts from "car-cam" to camcorder are great.  If I didn't know better I would swear you have a cab mounted camera onboard that locomotive.

Looking forward to more progress on the Richlawn "alcove sub"! :o)

Thanks Kevin R!

Kevin,

I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.  I like making them and learned alot about editing by watching other's videos with a critical eye.  I'm looking forward to the time when the alcove area has scenery and I can produce a video run through it.
