Is there a simple way to reduce the size of a picture file in order to post it?  The posting mechanism tends to reject a lot of my pictures claiming that the file is too large.  How does one get a 1.4 MB file down to less than 1 MB?

Free, easy to use photo resizing software

I use Faststone Photo Resizing software (for Windows) and it works great.  Here's their site:

Reducing picture size

There was a discussion awhile ago where forum members gave various methods to do it.

Resizing Images

IRFANVIEW is a free image program that will allow you to easily resize photos before uploading.

sizing

If you have Windows you probably already have a program called "paint" that will give you quite a lot of image control - including sizing.

If you have MS Office...

You're likely to have something called "Microsoft Office Picture Manager."  It has a function for compressing image files that's very easy to use.

Most digital images are way too large for posting on the web

The reason we restrict image file size is to make you do the work up front to resize the images appropriately for the web. Anything over about 1 MB is wasting bandwidth. Most modern digital cameras are sizing images for printing to paper, not to display on computer screens. Paper needs a much higher resolution (more pixels) for the image to look good.

That said, if you're submitting images to us for publication in MRH, we like at least 2 megapixels (1900 x 1200). But for this web site, anything over about 800 pixels in any direction is a waste of bandwidth. 800 x 600 is just about perfect.

iPhoto

Better yet, Aran, is to use iPhoto on the Mac.

Choose the images you want to resize in iPhoto, than from the menu choose File, than Export, and in the next window, under Size choose Custom, and set the actual pixel size you want to set the maximum to (for MRH, 750 and below).

Set a destination (I use another folder for my web images, makes uploading easier) and voila. Very easy to do tens, or even hundreds of pictures at a time.
