When my our Benjamin moved out there was another room in the basement. My wife told me, better a railroad than another storeroom. Well, the

Silver Valley RR

was born. The route from module to module.

Here's Extra 462 east on it's way from Fiddletown to Silver Creek.

Nice video

Thanks for sharing. I started modeling HOn3 30 years ago. Wish that they had Blackstone engines back then. I like the white extra flag that you added to your engine. What did you use to make the flag?

I've used thin paper and 0,3mm wire for the flags. Those "flimsie" type paper. I've got decals wrapped with this paper.

Very nice Video Wolfgang !!!

Wolf!!  Your just having too much fun for one person. I can sit and watch those mudhens all day long. Sometimes I do and find I need to get back to laying track when It comes to the end of what's already constructed. You have some very nice scenery. Your track work and the ballast look just like the old narrow gauge ballast on the D&RGW back in the Narrow Gauge days. You also have a couple of very well constructed Tunnel Portals.

Did you scratch build the little church or is that the model of the church in Bodie Colorado? Nice little town too,

church / school house

Thank you for the nice words. Yes, narrow gauge is fun! And I like all facets.

There was a prototype in Salina, CO and I made a HowTo for my scratch built structure. I've used Google view to get more pictures from the real structure.

Nice Link to how you built the Church/School/House

After clicking on the two sites you talked about I was quit impressed with your work and photo layout on how to build the church/School house. Thanks and you really should submit it to The MRH magazine as a construction article it will be a hit.

Great looking deck

The deck on that flat car looks great, Wolfgang.  Do you have a video on how you did that?

Enloyed your video, as I always do!

flat car deck

At first I've painted the flat car as usual, after decaling it got a layer of dull cote. With the dull cote still wet I've brushed different chalks onto the deck. For this work gloves are a good idea to prevent finger prints.

Blackstone

Now I've got my C-19. Thank you to Blackstone, it's a very nice engine and runs good. I've weathered this engine.

Here you see her with Train 56, 2nd section on the way to Fiddletown.

update

The Silver Valley RR gave me a lot of fun. But with a modular layout it's hard to have some grades. So I came to the idea to built a permanent layout in this room.

Now I've finished the backdrop. But I have still to build quite a few turnouts for the new staging yard, dual gauge turnouts. Therefore I will use the chance for a reminiscence of Silver Valley RR. In six weeks for the January meeting of the Narrow Gauge Division I will dismatle the modules for the meeting. Then the room will be empty and I start building the Pueblo & Salt Lake RR.

There're will be six weeks to enjoy the modular home layout and take pictures. A first pic:

Handbrake for Windows or Mac video encoding

Hi Wolfgang,

I find encoding video for Youtube to be a pain. You get a video made in HD then upload it and it shows as 480p or less. I have used "Handbrake" to encode and have had good success. I jump around from my PC to my Hack Mac so cant really tell you what settings to use. I need to write down the settings that work so I will have them for my next video.

Love your videos BTW.

Ride the Goose

I've got the ConCor Hon3 goose and hat to make a video. It's fun running this motor car over the layout.

Great View

So how did you get the video? It's off-center of the track, so it's not a normal train cam. I'm guessing you mounted a camera on a car pulled by another locomotive in front of the Goose? What a fantastic idea!

making off

Yes, I had a flat car pulled by an K-27. I placed a tiny cheap spy camera at this flat car. The problem was with some trial and error to get the correct angle for the curves. The camera had to look into the curve. And this was dependent on the distance between goose and camera. Really, try and error.

But it was fun.

An idea

One of the things I want to try, is building a gimbal for a small camera like that. Using servos from remote control airplanes, I could pan and tilt as needed. The original idea was to look down on tracks below where the train was rolling, but it would be ideal for shots like you did too.
