I'm working on building a static grassinator.

I saw the video for building the static grass applicator. I downloaded the directions from the R.A. Cooke website. However the ion generator that was recommended from goldmine-elec.com is no longer made. I went to Oatley electronics, where I bought the ion generator (IONA2). The unit has 4 wires as opposed to the 3 of the older model. The diagram from Oatley indicates small red to battery +   Small black to battery  - . I'm not sure about the two wires (large red with a small brush attached and the large green ) I think the large red should go to the metal screen and the green to the nail in the scenary to be covered. I am also wondering about the power supply size for these new units as they are advertised to be more powerful. By way of info I am using a plastic flashlight as the handle-housing.

Can anyone confirm this or how do I correctly wire it.

You are correct. red is the ion gen and goes to screen,  green is the ground plane.  You want the scene to become the ground plane so you bring that wire out and to the ground point (nail).

Anything in the 6 to 9VDC / 300mA power pack if ok. I run my rechargeable version on close to 12V and you can just see and hear the HT jump the gap as you move the ground closer to the screen.  Oatley recommend (guarantee)   7.5VDC.

Marc...

I'm including this here for others with this in mind.    Comparing these 2 units leaves me wondering which, if any, would be adaptable to the purpose:

From http://www.allelectronics.com

Ionizer                                Input 120VAC  Out: 7.5KV                      Cat#  SW-750

Gas Tube Sign PS           Input 120VAC  Out: 2KV   @10mA        Cat#  HVS-1

Peter-f, and others...

The Ionizer #SW-750 is the same 120 volt negative ION generator that I used for my corded 120V applicator.  It is the most powerful applicator I have seen so far.  More powerful than 12V, more powerful than the Noch and far more powerful than the hacked fly swatters.

The gas tube power supply is rather underpowered at 2kV, IMO.  An electronic fly swatter would be comparable.

ion generator grass

I have built the generator but do not know what static grass to buy for tall weeds. I have Woodland Scenics Static grass flock. it seems too short to do more than just cover. Any suggestions as to brand and style?

One of the RMH sponsors sells the taller Static Grass (Scenic Express).

Others have suggested multyple coats can produce a taller weed like finish as the fibers stand almost end to end.

 Thanks

I had missed it in the places I normally look. I will go to Scenic Express now

Static Grass in N Scale

Yesterday I viewed Joe Fugates scenery video, in that video he shows how to make a static grass applicator.  I'm might just do that but wonder if this static grass is recommended in N scale layouts?  I imagine it woudl make a great wheat field but I'm modeling an urban / waterfront area with few grassy areas - but there are some.

It is things like this where it would be great to belong to a MRR club which could buy or build one and lend (rent?) it out to members given that it is the sort of thing you'd use for a bit then set aside.

Anyone who has used this in N scale have any convincing photo's?

N scale

FKD, I made a test area on my N scale diorama at the top of the photo below.  I'm certain this is the 2mm static grass.  4mm would be OK as well, but 6mm would represent more like a wheatfield or very tall grass.

N-Scale Static Grass vs Ground Foam Picture

The picture below is from my N scale layout.  The grass in the foreground is groundfoam.  The grass behind the telephone pole and also by the rocks at the top of the hill is 4mm Silflour static grass from Scenic Express.  Generally, I plan to use static grass in the foreground and groundfoam further away.  People who have seen the static grass are really impressed and I ask them to feel it.

Hello.  I'm new to the Forum.  I discovered, while sorting a lot of model RR stuff,  a SW750 negative ion generator I purchased years ago.  I had to contact The Electronic Goldmine to find out what it was.  Apparently I intended on building my own static grass applicator.  Problem is, I have no idea how to use the SW750 - and how to attach or apply it on a DIY grass applicator.  I've seen several videos (using a bug zapper, etc.) but the SW750 is very different (it has 4 sharp prongs, one which attacked me).  Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks

The wire with the 4 prong gizmo is what goes to the screen. Simply cut the 4 prong thing off and discard it.

Wire up the remaining wires as normal;  power  and ground common.

All electronics no longer carries the   Ionizer #SW-750.  Anywhere else?
