I recently got my IMRC Maxi-IV (have had a Kato version for a month now), and got around to creating a side-by-side comparison of the cars:  http://modelrailroadtips.com/index.php?op=Articles;article=216

Glad I don't model intermodal

From that comparison, I'm afraid my selection would be "none of the above."

Although for me at least, the couplers would not be a problem.

Yeah, couplers are NO problem

Yeah, couplers are NO problem for me. Sergent all the way! The issue with intermodal is always weight. Kato & Walthers are on the right track for bare table trains, they just sacrifice some detail along the way. The decision for anyone selecting a Maxi-IV set will be: Decent weight/Poor Detail/Compatible coupler boxes (Kato) VS. Light weight/Great detail/Scale (narrow) coupler boxes (IMRC)
