Just got back from the All Aboard 2011 train show at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon, hosted by the Prairie Rail Workshop model railroad club.  My son and I enjoyed the show once again and one of my favourites was back this year - the live steam engines.  Unfortunately, I failed to charge my camera battery last night, so I ran out of juice and also didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to for fear of running out of juice.  Also, because it is in the Western Development Museum, the lighting isn't the best for photographs, or more appropriately, isn't conducive to photographs taken by someone with my skill level and camera.  I still took 20 some pictures, though, so hopefully some of you will enjoy them.

I also managed to pick up an HO Scale Rapido Lightweight Coach in the CN wet noodle scheme, which I was very pleased about.  In fact, one dealer from Donalda, AB, had a plethora of Rapido HO coaches and I could have spent a lot more money if I didn't have so much stuff pre-ordered already.  Also picked up a couple Atlas N Scale box cars in CP multi-mark.

I didn't get all the names of the layouts or who they belonged to, either, so if anyone can add information or any more pictures, please do.

Start with the hosts

First up is the host Prairie Rail Workshop N scale layout.  This is the first time I've seen this layout at this size.  Apparently they've added a number of new sections to it and it is now in the shape of a y (with a tail) more or less.  A double track main runs down both sides of the modules and I think I heard someone say it was about 7 scale miles of track now.  You can see roughly the size of it from the photo below:

Here is a shot of an industrial area on one of the "blob" ends:

And right beside this (to the left of the above picture) is this:

Further down the line, there is this quite impressive trestle:

Here is one of my "great" photography moments with the blurring train, but this appears to be 3 SD's leading a string of mostly Rapido (or all) Panorama passenger cars (about 12 if I remember correctly).  This also shows the tail of the "y" part of the layout:

And here is another VIA train being lead by a couple Kato E8's (one with sound) and what I can only guess are Con-cor passenger cars, but I can't be certain, its just a guess.  And, yes, for those of you that follow my blog, one of these Kato E8's is identical to mine, except I put a TSU-750 in mine and this one I was told has an MRC decoder.  (And, yes, its blurry again).

Here is a new building that's been added as well, a meat packing facility.  Nicely detailed from where I stood:

That's all the pictures I've got of the host layout.  We spent quite a bit of time looking over this one, there is a LOT here.  My son and I both chose between this and the Calgary club's layout as best in show (and ended up with one vote for each).

More Pics

OK, I'm almost embarassed that I can't seem to remember much at all after just a few hours, so I'll post the photos and what I think they are from and hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.  I know this one is from the Thunder Creek club in Moose Jaw.  I think it must be their small layout for taking to shows.  Its in N scale:

This next one I can't remember for certain.  I'm thinking its also from the Thunder Creek layout (in the area to the left if I backed up 5 paces from the photo above):

This is another layout that I remember from last year.  Its N scale once again and has two indepedent loops around it - one on a high level and one on a low level.  My son couldn't seem to get enough of watching the lower train going through the tunnels.

Here is an S scale and American Flyer roundabout without scenery (and a bit of Lionel).  I know I say this regularly on here, but there is just something about S scale that seems to me to be the "perfect" size and every time I see it I think I would like to try it one day.

This next one is an oval of track with some buildings in O scale.  I have to say, the sound out of this loco was really good.

Finally for this post, the coffee table train layout.  The picture doesn't do it justice, but the table itself is really, really nice.  They sell tickets on it to raise money for Kiwanis, so I just had to buy some because it goes to a good cause, right?

Even more pics

Alrighty, moving along.  I didn't see an identifier on this next HO layout, but it was obviously built for moving around.  I took a few pictures of it as this was before I realized I was running out of juice in the camera.

Here is another angle of the mine with more of the layout in it.  I have this Walther's kit in N scale, so you'll see I take a few photos of it when I see it in either HO or N.

This one is again, a wider of the above HO layout (with my steady hand photography):

Here is a little European inspired scene with a streetcar that makes its way back and forth between the shed and the other end of the track.

Next to this, built by the same (I'm assuming) gentleman, was this little diorama. Very nicely detailed little scene with what appears to be cotton for the smoke from the campfire:

At this point I realized I didn't have a lot of juice left in the camera and so my pictures became more scarce, and in fact, I missed a few layouts.  I only got one shot of the BiG Layout in G Scale.  It looked to me like they've added another little animation scene in (or at least I hadn't noticed it before).  There are a lot of little details and animations on this layout and pictures really don't do it justice.  You just have to see it.  I did take a video of the new animation and I'll see if it turned out and post it later if it did.

Finally, for this post, a shot of the Live Steam loco.  I missed when he was running it, so I've only got it parked, but these are just cool.

Yet more pics

OK, moving along, we've got another N scale layout here.  This one is here every year I've come to the show and my son enjoys following the trains around the layout.  One side is a figure eight with a double loop at one end and the other side is a loop - two indepedent routes.  This is the figure eight with the over/under loop on the one side.

Here is a picture of the mine on this layout in N scale:

And here is a close up of it.  Yes, this was just to see how it was modelled because I'm building one soon.

Here was another little N scale layout:

Last of the photos

OK, I've got six more photos here, 2 of the Lego layout and 4 from the Calgary club that was here (I THINK they are called the Battle River Model Railroad club, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong).  First the Lego.  This layout is also here every year I've gone and they keep adding bits here and bits there.  This year there are a few new additions.  The ferris wheel and carousel (both powered and operating):

And the two wind turbines, both operating as well:

And then the final one I have pictures of.  This was quite a large HO layout and they had a few trains running on it, but the one pictured below had 56 cars pulled by two locos (my son counted them):

They also had some neat little details, like this police take down and helicopter rescue (sorry again about the blur):

Here is the intermodal facility (along with a string of new Saskatchewan grain cars):

Finally, here is the yard on the one side of the layout:

That's all the pictures I have.  If anyone has any more, please add them.  I'll work on that little video I took and see if its worth posting.  Hope you enjoyed the show tour.

Taking in the show...

Looks like a great show Dave.

We're going early Sunday morning and I brought my cameras too.  I'll see if I can come up with some good pics and/or videos.

Thanks for the report!

Edit:  It's the Bow River Club from Calgary

All Aboard 2011...continued

We had a great time today at the Saskatoon Model Railroad Show.  We thought we would beat the crowds by arriving early but the parking lot was filling up by the time we rolled in, about 9:30.

By all acounts, the show was a huge success!  Saturday was a very busy day and judging by the early crowds Today will be busy too.

I spoke with some of the fellows from the hosting Prairie Rail Workshop Club, whom I met last year at the Thunder Creek show In Moose Jaw.  The clubs layout has been expanded and now boasts an impressive seven N-scale miles of track.  One of the best features on the layout is the trestle, IMO.

PNR

Thank you for the information Dave.  I was hoping PNR stood for Pacific Northwest as I live in Kamloops BC.  Moose Jaw is a little too far to go.

PNR 6th

I believe the PNR 6th encompasses Alberta, Saskatchewan and part of Montana.
