Weathering

Thank you Anthony! I sprayed on a heavy coat of Dull Cote followed by hand painting the runs from the walk brackets. I used several different shades of powdered rust. You have to do it to your own taste. After it suited me, more Dull Cote.

What is the advantage?

What is the advantage of such a large car vs two half the size?

Are tank cars ever transported partly full? Wouldn't that be a safety issue? I'm just imagining what would happen under emergency braking if it was half full and everything inside suddenly slammed forward. Seems like that might be problematic.

Does anyone know if these cars were used in captive service somewhere? I wonder if they hauled enough product over their lifespan to pay for the cost of specialized cars? .....DaveB

Always full

Yes, DuPont always shipped these cars full. They picked up the cargo in Texas and shipped it to their synthetic fiber plant in Delaware!

Captive service

Yes, they were used strictly by DuPont for hauling Ethylene glycol! They even converted five cars that hauled other cargo over to Ethylene glycol service.

98% full

Most non-pressure tank cars are filled 98% full to allow for expansion if the load gets warmer.  This is true of the older designs with domes and the post-1960 designs without domes.

Yes, partial loads would be a problem train handling-wise.  I gather it was done occasionally l in the old days for short distances, where one customer would receive part of the load, then the car moved to a second customer, but that was the exception to the rule. And no, I'm not talking about multi-compartment tanks.  Those carry different liquids in each compartment all going to one customer.   For instance, different grades of lubricants.

Pressure tank cars are always full, because they carry gases.  Both ways.  Think about it.....

If memory serves, these ethylene glycol tanks were built as pressure tanks for LPG but were converted to non-pressure tanks after 1970.

Scott, five were converted from high pressure cars. No one knows what the hauled originally!? I'm sure the original 70 always ran as full as allowed!? Thank you Scott! The original cars were built for the purpose of hauling EG!

Thank you! They ran on CSX, so you could see them going through New Orleans and then through Waycross ga until about 2009 when they timed out by the 40 year rule! Tank cars have a 40 year life span before they have to ask for a ten year extension or no more interchange, or get scrapped!

baffled

Internal baffles. That was the part I didn't know about. Never been inside one of those tank cars you see. That's why I was baffled!

Thanks - great modelling, I don't think I realized at first it wasn't a prototype picture.

Still not sure why they'd build such a thing instead of just running two smaller ones.

I did realize my question about shipping not-full applied to liquids and not gasses. I think ethylene glycol is a liquid - it's the main ingredient in antifreeze, right?

Thank you sir! The advent of larger rail cars went all the way to the Supreme court! A bigger car allowed lower prices per ton! The Southern Big John covered hopper was the test case.
