0loader1.jpg Gang,

I got this in a box of junk buildings at a train show. After removing 30 years of layout dirt and grime and trimming some of the dock, removing the gigantic forklift-looking thing... this is what is left. The office covering the motor was missing.

I have used other similar docks in the past. The loading ramp and the overall dock are a nice piece and can be turned into something believable.

This one is a little different. There are ALL KINDS of holes that need filling. I had thought about cutting it up. I have considered a thin layer of styrene to go over the present layer. I even thought about cutting out the deck and putting a new one in. I dunno, it all seems like a whole lotta work. Anyone ever tackled a kitbash on one of these?

Tyco made a plain dock

Their plain concrete looks a lot like this one.  Maybe not quite as long?

To repurpose this one I'd just cut the top surface away completely and replace with one or two large pieces of styrene.  Paint to look like concrete.  Done.  _Much_ easier than cutting little bits of styrene to fill the many holes, much less trying to hide the seams.

Thanks, Scott

The plain dock is one section narrower. I do not know how much shorter it is. You know I have fun making something believable out of junk.

You have the best idea. I think I am going to cut it up even more. I saw an example where the ramp is perpendicular to the dock and I kinda liked that.  Regardless, I will definitely just replace the deck. It is gonna be much easier than any other option. I was hoping to save more of the original, but there are just too many holes to patch.

dock kitbash

Seems like it would be easier/less work in this case just to make one from scratch with styrene sheet...

...

For this one, put a new building on the dock.  Cover the major holes.

Well, the project is a semi-failure... Oh well... I tried

Benny, I have done what you suggest on occasion, but I am really into LARGE backdrop bldgs. that dwarf the trains. So, I cut out the majority of the holes and had plans to place a piece of styrene in the hole to make a new deck.

By the way, this will give you an idea between the dock Scott mentioned earlier. The smaller dock is approx. 21 feet wide, while the bigger dock is 29 feet. That seems to make sense that the concrete squares are 8 foot. Unfortunately, they are actually a little bigger than that. I measured pretty roughly, because I really didn't care that they were different.

When I started to really think about it, I thought there was still a lot of work to make this thing look right. So, I started exploring other options. I cut the deck because I decided I did not want to try and blend the material and have an expectation that it would even look correct. I figured I could make a wider ramp than what was molded.

It didn't take long to discover that even though the docks look similar they obviously are not. Well, shoot. Now, what do I do? I decided just to salvage some parts like the ramp and some dock walls. When one thinks about it, that isn't really doing much because, as Chris points out, it would probably be easier to just cut it from blank styrene stock.

Here is what I ended up with.

I mean, I can use these pieces but I am not sure for what at this particular time. The good news is that this dock was probably considered a throw-away piece because it was tossed into a box with a few much better structures. At the end of the day, nothing was really lost because it was fun just cutting and bashing and trying to make something unique.

Onto the next project !
