I’m having a problem programming two different Broadway Limited locomotives. I use a raspberry pie Sprog to program and the locomotives are both steam, mine a 2-8-2 and a friends 2-8-8-4. On my locomotive it will program to do everything except go in reverse. On a friend‘s Locomotive it will do all the sounds but will not respond to a throttle. I intend to replace the Decoders in both of my Broadway Limited locomotives bad for my friend it would be nice to get his working. Any ideas or special techniques for programming Broadway Limited locomotives? Thanks for any help.

Programming and running are different things

If your engine won't run in reverse then it might have a blown motor FET (field effect transistor) on the board.

For your friend, two common problems are either CV29 does not have the right value to match the address, or a value other than 00 has been entered into CV19.  Check those.

Something to consider.

This is a BLI conversion done by Larry Linger.  He shows the complete surgery.  He also follows the conversion video with two decoder sound comparison videos that should really be played on something better than laptop, tablet or phone speakers.

Here are the links.

FYI, I contacted BLI about the problem and they referred me to someone, forget the name, who does there decoder work. Their advice, put in a new decoder. That's what I'm planning on mine anyway but would like to get my friends working. I like the WOW decoders for my steam. Thanks for the ideas.

I was able to fix my friends engine. There is a manual reset on the board in the tender. Once I went through the process in the instructions to manually reset the decoder I was able to program it. Haven't gone back to mine yet. Truth be told I will probably put new decoders in both of my BLI steamers anyway. BTW, WOW has a great video about mounting the speaker under the coal load. I've tried it on three locos and have gotten great sound from each one.
