Yes

Why do you ask?

FP45s were rare but famous.  Lots of images of them out there.  Lots of models made.

Thanks

Mainly out of curiosity. Been a model rail for over 50 years and never heard of this engine before. I wonder if any models were made in N scale? I will have to do some research.

Fp45's ex Amtrac.

Santa Fe bought the Amtrac Fp45's when Amtrac had derailment problems with them.  They were modified with the anti climber and front walkway at the nose, and painted in the red & silver warbonnet scheme for the "Super Fleet" and numbered in the 100 series about the time that the pic was taken.  That locomotive may have just come out of the paint shop.  I think they were all decommissioned and sold off shortly after the BNSF merger.  Wisconsin Central bought 1 or 2 that I think are still in service.  #108 went to the Sothern California Railway Museum in Perris, Ca. where it has been refurbished and is used to pull tourist trains.

Mechanically, it is an Sd45 in with a "covered wagon" body.  When Amtrac had it, it was equipped with a hep generator.  I think Santa Fe probably eliminated the hep generator since they did not need it for freight operation.

Later years

I recall seeing those running out their years on freight trains over Tehachapi . You might find some video of them on youtube if you search something like "atsf fp45 tehachapi"? ....DaveB

Amtrak

Just to be clear, Amtrak didn't buy FP45's, they bought SDP40F's, which look very close to FP45's but are a 3000 hp 12 cylinder engine rather than the FP45's 3600 hp 20 cylinder engine.

The SDP40F doesn't have a front "platform" or railing.  The FP45 has a longer hood section behind the radiator fans.

Never tried Athearn in N

I have had Athearn HO scale engines and in my opinion they were some of the better HO.

I have never had any Athearn in N scale. I am curious as to how well they run.
I had spent hundreds of dollars on other N scale engines such as the old Bachmanns and a couple of life like.
I quit buying anything but Kato because i was tired of wasting my money on junk.
If Athearn's N scale are as god as their HO I just might have to try one.

AS noted the FP45s are not

AS noted the FP45s are not the same as the AMTRAK SDP40F though they are very similar.

The FP45s are fairly famous in railroad circles. Originally purchased for ATSF passenger services. They were repainted into the Yellow and Blue Warbonnet and spend many years in service until I believe 1989 when ATSF created the Super fleet. All the remaining FP45s were repainted into Red and Silver with Giant Billboard style Santa Fe on the side and were run on priority freights. Eventually the GP60Ms and Dash8-40BWs took over and the FP45s were taken off the priorities, but they kept their shinny paint. The FP45s were numbered down in to the 90s so 92, 93, 95 as the GP60Ms took over the 100s.

The inaugural run of the first Super Fleet GP60Ms had 2 FP45s in the middle. I Believe it was a 199 train Chicago Corwith to Bay Area.

I have never had any Athearn

I have several of their N scale locos and they all run without problems. These locos are some of my best performers.

Thanks for the info.

Michaelrose55, Thanks for the info. I am always skeptical of buying motive power due to all the bad experiences I have had in the past.
Will definitely check Athearn out.

Not correct

Russ said: "Santa Fe bought the Amtrac Fp45's when Amtrac had derailment problems with them."

That is incorrect. Amtrak purchased 150 derailment-prone SDP40Fs, not FP45s. There were no serious issues with FP45s.

Amtrak traded 18 SDP40Fs to Sante Fe for light-horsepower four-axle units. Sante Fe rebuilt the SDP40Fs for freight service.

FP45

I don't know if it was done in N scale but I have an HO Atlas blue box FP45 that still runs great. Of all my old locos, it is my favorite. Glenn

Another preserved FP45

is at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL:

The Illinois Railway Museum is well worth a visit if you're ever remotely in the vicinity. For railfans it's far more than a quick stop. In fact, on their big operating days (roughly Memorial Day weekend, Diesel Days, Labor Day weekend and one or two others), IRM more or less becomes an operating session on a 12":1' model railroad!

I am pretty sure that this FP45 is operable and I believe that it runs on Diesel Days weekend, at least.

and another one...

ATSF 97 is at what used to be called the Age of Steam museum in Dallas, TX. It's moved to Frisco, TX now but I haven't seen it there. 356-Pano.jpg

I did not realize that such a large proportion of the FP45s had survived. Of the 14 produced, six survive! That's even better than Big Boy.

Not mine

No even though I have been a professional photographer since I was 19, that pic belongs to an online friend. Yes 68 was 7 years before Robert  Sasson invented the first digital camera.
I loved that pic as well, but the old warbonnet on that loco is awesome.
