I’m interested in interior cab lighting of HO modern engines.

I want to simulate the glow of control panels and the subdued lighting of a train cab at night.

Is this feasible?  Thoughts?

Make it really dim. There's

Make it really dim. There's nothing worse than when the brightness control of the screens is broken and you have to deal with one or more of the screens blaring fully bright in your face all night.

Airplanes use red for a reason

It was long ago determined this was the best colour for preserving night vision, hence why its used in airplanes, subs, etc. so I’d use red LEDs and keep the actual bulbs out of sight.

Per clip below, maybe backlight the control stand.

Easy…

I have general cab lights lighting up the cab.  I know they are too bright.  I do that for show.  A properly sized resistor, as James Regier has pointed out, can be much less brilliant and behave with less flicker in video applications.  LEDs come in many sizes and colors.  White LEDs can be tinted to a color that is acceptable according to Jeff Bunza. People have demonstrated that 3D printing can be very accurate in small detail.  Look at a Loco Light step light or ground light from NixTrainz on #80 drill in the pin vise on the left of the dime or a Little Lionel in n scale from Bernard Hellen at miniprints.

Seems to me all we need to manifest this is control stand idea is someone who is willing to 3D print a control stand or an instrument panel with steam gauges from an airplane in clear plastic, Bill Brillinger to print the decals to represent the steam gauges or the flat panels in the new locomotives and a Custom Decoder Buddy with the properly sized resistors powered by a 21-pin decoder and a little time to paint and install it in the locomotive from the modeler.

Piece of cake.  What next…….???

I’m not home to light it up, but

My Rapido RS-18 came with beautiful cab lighting. The gauges on the control stand are quite visible as they are backlit, so it can be done.  Now if they would just include scale crew!

I found this link to a Rapido video that shows the Rapido RS-18 cab lighting in the first few seconds:
