HO scale ballast and initial ground cover.  This is right from the railroad’s ballast pile.  (I don’t think they missed it….)

Make life easier...

Take a old loco motor ( I use a surplus Athearn Blue Box ) and add a knob to the shaft. The knob is like a volume control one, with a set screw is best. It wont fit perfectly, but thats the point. The offset knob on the motor creates a cam that will vibrate.

Clamp the motor and cam to the sieve. I use a old DC throttle and turn the motor on slow, youll find where it vibrates the best.

The vibration makes it EASY to sift things. Dirt and ballast goes fast.

Work smarter not harder.
