Just getting started with sound.  Quick question for TSU2 sound decoders.  Is there a way to have the locos on mute when you turn track power on?  Even when I have F8 selected for all my TSU2 locos (8 of them).  If I turn the track power off and then back on the sound come on for al of them.  I would like them to all stay muted and then just turn on the sound for the locos I am using.

CV114 is the solution:

CV114 is the solution: https://soundtraxx.com/content/Reference/Manuals/Tsunami2/tsu2_diesel_technical_ref.pdf

Scroll down to: CV114 Engine Excaust Control. Here bit 5 has to be set to a value of "0" to disable auto-start.

bit 5 has a value of 32 if ON and 0 if OFF

There's an option in some

There's an option in some decoders (and I'm pretty sure that the one that I have that does this is a Tsunami 1) that appears in DecoderPro as with words to the effect of "don't do anything until you get an explicit command." When the power comes up, this loco just sits, silently. When I turn on its headlight or notch it up, the sound comes on, which I think is the behavior you're after. Sorry, I'm not looking at DecoderPro so can't see the option name...

Not a direct answer to your question, but a suggestion based on my own experience.

Of all the decoder manufacturer's out there, Soundtraxx has the best, most well written and understandable documentation out there.

You'll want both the Diesel User Guide and the Tech Reference.

I learned more about DCC from these docs than most of the other resources available at the time.  I loaded the PDFs on my tablet, they make great reading.

Steam vs Diesel

I don't have any diesel TSU2 yet, but with the steam ones, if you set the sound time-out to a value in seconds other than 0 then the sound won't come on until you acquire the locomotive and send it a speed command. I did this recently with an Athearn model with a TSU2 pre-installed.

Each Decoder Brand different?

I'm interested in the same idea as the OP suggested,  .....but not just for Tsunami decoders. Since I will likely have locos on my layout that have a variety of decoders, I'm wondering if the same sort of 'mute-till-called-upon' feature is available for some of the other brands??

EDITED: reversed the wording 'just not' to 'not just',...makes more sense

Each brand works a little differently. ESU decoders are silent on startup by default, at least the diesel ones. To be fair, I don't have diesel TSU2 decoders to compare to, engine start-up sounds don't make a whole lot of sense for a steamer....
