Make A Better Looking Model Railroad with Fascia Panels

Today we are installing fascia panels on my model railroad layout! Fascia Panels are a great way to give your model train layout a cleaner and more finished look!

MRH NOTE
Jimmy would never use "professional" to describe his model railroading skill, so this makes Jimmy sound pompous and he's far more modest than that -- so we changed it. Also, if anyone wants to critique MRH products or MRH Staff/extended Staff model railroading content, we appreciate it as long as it's not just mean-spirited bellyaching. The concept that you need to be one to critique one doesn't apply to MRH.

Suggestions for a better job …

Suggestions for a better job:

  1. Buy the 4 x8 sheet and have it ripped into even strips on a panel saw at the lumber yard. Be mindful of kerf losses to keep them precisely the same.  Masonite is cheap as wood goes.
  2. 1’ wide seems overpowering on a small layout.
  3. That filler strip in the corner is ghastly.  See #1.
  4. Make sure the outside corners are flush (no gaps)
  5. The substructure is not perpendicular, so neither is the fascia.
  6. Pre-drill screw holes.  Masonite is not forgiving to self tapping screws, and turns to powder, weakening the attachment.
  7. Either countersink for flush screws, or use the two part plastic buttons to hide surface mount screws.  Or at least dip the heads in whatever colour being used to paint fascia before installing, or paint along with the fascia.
  8. Velcro is another option.
  9. Strip magnets work as well, but are not as strong if people are going to lean on it.

Okaaay........ Mike's critique is spot on and I can't tell if AzBaja is saying that tongue-in-cheek or not.  My local Home Depot will rip sheets of anything down to 2 foot widths.  With how flexible this stuff is you could fit it in just about anything you might drive.  No need to put the couple inch filler strip in the corner.

Fascia corners and joints

If you are going to teach people to do something you should at least try to do a better than average job, especially if its billed as being "professional".  He might be a professional, but his profession isn't installing fascia.

For example you can buy plastic strips that cover joints in shower enclosure paneling  for both seam joints, inside and outside corners.  They are available at most big box home improvement stores.  They create a nice smooth joint or corner and can be painted over.

loud background music compared to speech volume

Probably just me, but I tend not to watch videos where the background music is louder than the monolog of the presenter.  It makes it difficult for me to follow, so I tend to turn down the sound, which usually is the same as muting the speaker, and speed/skip through the video to see if there actually anything that is novel or compelling.

If you're trying to show me how to do something, cut the music and just talk.  If you're playing music, it's harder to figure out what you're trying to say.

Plus nobody was ever hit with a copyright strike by the record industry for not playing music on their videos.

When you use YouTube approved music that will never happen.  That is all I use, music from the YouTube play list.  With out music you have dead spots and viewers will drop,   So keep the music going so I can keep the users from dropping.

Also this video is not made for people like you.  This video is for people that are starting out and need help from a regular guy.

But the title doesn't say "for people that are starting out and need help from a regular guy" it says:

How a professional model railroader installs fascia panels

I am sorry, that is not the product I would expect of a "Professional model railroader."  I am led to believe that Jimmy and AzBaja are the same person now, and based on other posts of yours I have seen, this is not the level of detail you usually work at.

No, I'm pretty sure they're not....

I've been a Patron of Jimmy for some time now, and I can't imagine him calling himself a "professional model railroader". He's far more modest than that. Jimmy is also on the MRH staff, and would have no need to promote his videos under another name here. In fact, it irks me more than a little that someone ELSE is posting HIS videos here... before he even has a chance to do it himself.  I've even seen them appear here brfore I even have a chance to view them on Patreon.

Jimmy's not a cabinet maker, or a professional model maker. He IS a talented teacher, capable of explaining things clearly in terms others can easily understand, and I'm saying this as a former professional teacher myself.

I'd suggest, that if people think they can do a better job, then get up off your keister and DO it. Spend the money for good camera equipment and lights and software, and the time to learn how to work and edit the results. You'll find there's a lot more to it than sitting in front of a camera and talking, or sitting at your computer and criticizing the work of others.

Goodness.... Now I need to design and build my own automobiles to critique the new Corvette, play and produce music to say how I feel about an album, have a novel published before I can recommend or pan a book?  The range of things I do for my hobby is broad enough and I have no desire to make money from what I do for relaxation.  There was a critique that was given on the fascia that was correct, and it was just that - a critique.

Unfortunately for Jimmy, and TrainMasters TV, it lowers the chance that I would view any future videos offered by him.  It's ok for someone not have a perfect outcome of a project and show it - and then correct it. Jimmy apparently does this sometimes as evidenced by the outtakes shown at the end of the video.

No, I disagree, I don't need to produce my own videos to make statements about a different video, and people hopefully won't take it personally when others offer ideas to produce a better looking outcome.  And BTW, thoughtful ideas were offered above!

Cutting fascia

I wish I knew if he used a jigsaw or a Sabre saw to cut that. We need to be able to argue over important things like that still.

pick the comment that applies:

Wait now you can not post something unless I get your ok?

What is the problem if you see a video here or not?

It is also not a good idea to self promote too, makes you look shallow  and or desperate for attention?

Again if you do not have anything nice to say move and and find something else to do etc. maybe work on your own layout.

If you do not like what I do fine.  Do not read or look at my post or photos.  Now you are not offended by what I make or build.

If I missed your comment sorry.
