A number of us have steam engines that were produced a number of years ago, and may no longer be in production. Some of these locos had traction wheels.

Are there sources for replacement parts,...both tires and wheels?

from a Feb 2002 review,
https://www.trains.com/mrr/news-reviews/reviews/staff-reviews/rivarossi-allegheny-2-6-6-6-steam-locomotive-is-a-monster-even-in-ho-scale/

Quote:

There’s one plastic traction tire, on the left-hand wheel of the fifth axle.

The pickup arrangement of this engine is a little unusual: The locomotive picks up from the right-hand rail with its pilot wheel and first and third drivers, and from the left-hand rail with its fourth and sixth drivers and first two trailing wheels.

The locomotive can run independently of the tender, but the tender picks up too.

Your best bet is to get some

Your best bet is to get some "Bullfrog Snot" and make your own.

Bullfrog Snot

Rob in Texas has experimented with traction tires and bullfrog. I recall he became disappointed that the snot picked up too much dirt from the layout.

I'm trying to find out his final solution. After all he pulls really long trains with Alleghenys, and has done lots of experimenting with these locos.

Rivarossi now = Hornby

Hi Brian,

In the shakeout of who owns what now from "long ago" brands, Rivarossi is now made under the UK-based Hornby banner-head.

Get a set of metric vernier callipers or a micrometer and check out what your driving wheel diameter is and compare with  http://www.hornby-railway-trains.co.uk/Parts/Parts_Hornby_Traction_Tyres.htm#:~:text=Hornby%20spares%20-%20locomotive%20traction%20tyres%20%28tires%29%20,%20S%20et%20of%202%20-%20%C2%A32.67%20

Given that you are in the US and given that Hornby has sold a lot of stuff into Canada over the years, for Hornby spares, I'd be doing a search of some of the better Canadian hobby stores that sell Hornby.

If none of these are suitable, some of the European brands like Roco, Fieschmann and others have used traction tyres on their steam locomotives. Here's what's available from my local Fleischmann/Roco distributor in Australia:

https://www.allaboardexclusive.com.au/ho-scale/traction-tyres.html?limit=48

For any of the European brands, I'd be trying some of the specialist retail outlets that sell European stuff in the US. I can think of 2 of them that might have a range of traction tyres that might get you out of trouble.

Good hunting,

There are various sizes of

There are various sizes of these available ,  I saw some that were up 30mm. Since these are clear hair color shouldn't be an issue. 60 inch drivers work out to around 17.5 mm , so i would try the 15mm.

@Jim Ford

Thanks Jim, I think I will use them to get a set or 2 for my one Allegheny that has the proper drivers for those tires.

Ant idea where i might find another driver set that accepts traction tires?

Try the Tiny Rubber Bands

That the kids ( and maybe adults too) use with their braces. They come in different sizes.
