It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.  There were a few late-comers in last week's post.  Check them out, then come back here afterward.

Another evening

Paul Estep (first name taken from my last living uncle who sadly passed away recently) is taking a rest next to the Hunter, TN depot. Boots, his beloved hound, is taking up the entrance to the small depot, requiring everyone else to wait outside for the last evening train to Elizabethton.

Meanwhile down near Sadie, Mister Grindstaff is waiting to be able to close up for the evening.

KGB&W RS-11

Kewaunee, Green Bay & Western #309 sits in the weeds at Lymann Junction during an operating session on the North American Prototype Modelers HO scale layout in Milwaukee, Wisconsin last Saturday evening.  It was the model's operating session debut at my club, and I had a chance to photograph it while waiting for the interlocking signal to clear.LSIZE(2).JPG

The locomotive is an Atlas RS-11 which was modified by EngineHouse Services in Green Bay, including a reconstructed chopped nose and cab, removed dynamic brake equipment from the roof, plugged side vents along the long hood, and modified pilot steps to match the prototype locomotive.  Added-on details include all-weather windows, grab irons, short nose equipment, checker plate walkways, headlight visors, and wipers.  EngineHouse also did the electronics, including a Loksound DCC decoder, and effects including an operating strobe light and separately lit number boards.  They also painted the model and used custom decals to replicate the prototype in the late 1960s.

This image is a composite of several photos shot at different focus distances with an iPhone 8 Plus then combined into a single fully focused image using Helicon Focus software.

Rock Boxcar Weathering

Stunning job on that boxcar.  May I ask as to how you faded the rich blue colour of the base kit?

Hey Bob -

thanks much for the kind words!

I first applied Rustoleum dead flat. then airbrushed a very non scientific blend of Vallejo Model Air basic blue and white paint, mixed to the desired faded hue, and diluted with Joe F’s budget acrylic thinner mix. It’s a fairly thin “wash” consistency more than a “paint” consistency.   Mixing white and the underlying base color works better than just diluted white (this can give a frosted appearance). A couple light coats works well and fades out the lettering pretty well.  You can brush on the wash too but the airbrush mitigates any brush strokes.

It’s fun to take a Before pic or even better a side by side comparison!

cheers

Jeff

Cool

Thanks Jeff.  I've tried just white but will have a go at adding a touch of colour.

The Rock

@rideupjeep: that’s a neat find and amazing those are still roaming around in 2021!

@ricksutton:  thanks my man - I have learned alot from your super posts over the years, including fade techniques! Hope you’re doing well

Sorry there is no scenery yet …

… but the B&H has acquired #707, an Alco (MLW) C630 to replace a missing road switcher.  The Superintendent rather likes the colour so unlikely it will change - she’s on a perpetual lease.  She has just pulled up beside the shortline’s yard switcher. The trusty GP7 has gone amiss during the move and no amount of searching has yet found her.

I’ve always loved the BC Rail paint scheme and finding this Bowser ESU Loksound equipped unit at the LTS today - well too much temptation was just too much since my prototype had these in Maroon and Gray in 1969.

Will have to do some research to see if those built in ditch lights can be made to wag with the horn.

I'm assuming they were

I'm assuming they were picking up cars that had been sitting for years as there also was a Rock blue grain hopper in the same train. Just an interesting side note, none of the approximately 40 cars in the train were marked up with graffiti.
