Has anyone placed an order with Arizona Rock & Mineral recently?  Any feedback on actual response times?  I know their site warns about 21 day processing due to weather issues there, so I expected it to be slow.  However, we're a bit past that now and my calls are going to a voice mailbox that's full.

I'm not posting this to bash them at all.  Just looking for info to reset my expectations as necessary.  Having a company go silent after this long of a wait, when my card has already been charged, brings to mind an old Reagan-ism:  "Trust, but verify".

AR&M

I'm still getting their mailing list emails every few days. So the company hasn't gone dark. But no, I haven't ordered anything lately.

Call them

I had an order fall through the cracks a couple of years ago. A quick call cleared things up. They do answer the phone.

Calls

Hello Guy - I have called them several times this week, but calls are all going to voicemail. The mailbox is full, so no message can be left.

write, then call

IANALB, my understanding is that when you are charged for a purchase but goods aren't delivered, that falls into the category of "billing error" (rather than fraud), and therefore you have only 60 days to dispute the charge from the time that it appears on your monthly statement. (For debit cards with no monthly statement, I assume it's 60 days from when the money is taken from your account, but I'm not sure).

Write them an email, if you can, and call your credit card company before 60 days are up unless you're willing to simply write off the amount of your purchase.

You can call me EW. Here's my blog index

Thank you

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I tried calling again today, and this afternoon got a call back based on my number being seen in their caller ID.  Sounds like rain has continued to delay production there, but if we can catch a break from that, my order is currently second in line, with plans to "crush me", as I believe they put it, on Monday.   That means shipping on Oct 8 with arrival here likely around the 13th.

Can't wait!

That all sounds good, but

Today was supposedly the last day of Monsoon season,  but we are having more rain coming real soon.   In fact it is here now.

I didn't realize Arizona had

I didn't realize Arizona had such bad weather it would be a major delay factor for a company to ship stuff out.  I was just out there visiting my cousin Gary August at Meadview and it was hot and dry but I don't really know the weather patterns there.

I placed an order with them a

I placed an order with them a few week sago and it shows "being manufactured" on their website.   Not a huge issue for me personally since i dont need the ballast yet (I still have a few bags left from my last order).  Good to know the reason at least for their delays.

Glad it worked

I happened to talk to the owner when I called. It is fun to talk "rocks" with him

my bachelors and masters degrees are in geology, it would be fun to talk rocks.  Even though I don't make a living at it anymore (IT pays the bills now), I always found geology to be fun and interesting.

I am experiencing similar issues with them currently.  I placed an order right after Christmas, late December, paying with PayPal. Their site asks for 30 days to fulfill. After returning from the Springfield show I sent an email, without a reply. I sent another last week. Again no reply. Monday I placed a phone call, left a message on their voicemail, as of this writing, no return call. I am getting ready to get PP involved, which I’m reluctant to do, but I need some type of sign from them.

Anyone had any recent quality experiences with them?

I have recently experienced long order times, on the order of 12-16 weeks.   That said, I still am glad to have had the order come thru, despite the completion time, rather than no being able to obtain any of the product at all.

ARM makes batches of material since they are grinding real rock.  From what I gather they can only grind one type of rock at a time, in fairly small batches.  I have waited 6 months to get one of my orders (N scale cinders).  However , I was aware that they take a while to process the orders so I ordered it waaaaaaay in advance of when I was going to need it.  ARM is not a "just in time" operation.

On the other hand, it is far and away the best ballast I have used.

Well, I plan to ballast my track in the coming months and will try to keep this in mind if I need to order more.

I presently have a container of Scenic Express cinders ballast - typical of 70's D&RGW mainlines.  Here is what Rob Spangler of wp8thsup posted on another forum some years back:

It's good stuff.  I've been using it for my mainline ballast and some secondary tracks.  It's very easy to work with, and since it's real rock it doesn't float when water or glue is applied, nor is it affected by static (which can displace ballast onto the ties and rails before gluing).

So it seems Scenic Express is a good option if you don't want to wait 6 months for ballast.

I think I saw a message from Azrock that they're working through some health issues.  I like their stuff enough to have patience, but to also stock up when I do make an order.

The one hobby shop here in Florida that carries AR&M on the shelf has told me their order is months in waiting to be filled.

The hobby shop here in Dallas has a pretty good stock, he did mention that some were slower to get than others. I have some I would be willing to part with from an old layout, maybe those in need could post what they are looking for?

For the past several years it's been a habit of mine to buy a bag or two of AR&M ballast every time I visit my LTS. I suspect I have enough HO and N scale ballast to ballast my entire layout, plus do some gravel parking lots and shoulders.

Even so, it's not a source I want to see go away.

I'd have to admit that the best ballast that I've ever used (for N scale) was the Smith and Son.  But that has been gone for years, and I do not want to see AZRM go that way.

So I perused the ARM website and they didn't have any black cinders ballast for the D&RGW mainline, which is what I recall was used in the 70's.  But they had some labeled Southern Pacific?  I wonder if it's the same as RIo Grande but because SP took over as the corp image after 1988, they call it SP cinders ballast.

AzRock does have a sampler pack that's worth getting if you're trying to match prototype or other brands.  Now when you get it, be sure to go back to the website and label each little baggie.  At least when I got my sampler, the individual packages were not labeled (and that's unfortunate.)

Our NRHS Williams AZ chapter toured the AZ Rock & Mineral operation some years ago.  It is a one-man, pretty low-overhead, low-tech operation.   In the photo we are looking at a home-built shaker table with screens.  My last order for our club was placed in August and arrived a couple days before Christmas.  It appears demand outstrips capacity, and downtime for health issues will add to the lead time.

For what it's worth, there is a lot of ARM bags of Ballast on Ebay.  Considering on Ebay,  the vendors have to comply with certain rules, you could order the ARM ballast there and get it within a weeks time most likely, or get a refund.  Isn't that how it works?
