Pigs in the Yard

Nice atmosphere in that PRR shot, great work!

After doing a little railfanning on YouTube, I realized that my piggyback fleet was very lacking in 80's trailers that had hung on into the early-mid 90's.  So I am in the process of correcting that error.  Recently I've added a few REAZ trailers and a Preferred Pool. Here they are in the yard waiting to be added to the next outbound TOFC train.

Pigs in the yard.

Do you have any of the long runners where the trailer spanned the gap between cars? Your photo brought back memories of train watching in that era....DaveB

Long Runners

Hey Dave, I don't have any long runners on the layout yet.  TTWX cars were probably the most common flats on Soo/CP's Kansas City intermodals, so I have been on the lookout for more of those.  Long runners didn't come through very often and more so in the mid-late 90's.

SP&S Astoria Oregon

SP&S GP9 #154 is seen here near Astoria Plywood in October 1968. This line is dominantly ran with Alco RS3, so this EMD product is a nice treat.

BC&SJ

I shot the following in Junction City on my HO scale Bear Creek & South Jackson. The scenery in Junction City isn't complete by any means so there are some "obtrusions into reality" in these shots. I converted the fotos to B&W to add a period look.

-cs-1920.jpg
The Fithers Transfer & Storage building is ink-jet printed paper sides over foam core. It looks almost as good as the AMB SP depot in the right foreground. Models by Jim Moomaw.

A 100mm telephoto lens magnifies track irregularities in this shot.

The J. Hoerner Plumbing Supply building ia another ink-jeft / foamcore model by Jim Moomaw. Careful framing hides the fact that it's a background building.

A westward freight pulls by a passenger train making a station stop in Junction City.

Now I gotta get the motivators working to finish up some more scenery.

Late afternoon, circa 1943...

There are times when a window in the layout room comes in handy:

A light at the end of one tunnel....

I like the way the reworked headlights and ditch lights came out on the Atlas GP40-2(W).  The next step is to program the motor and tie it all to the Proto Throttle.

Long Runners on my layout

I have been running one pair of these for a decade or more, they never seem to have issues.

Trying out simple backdrop painting techniques

I will be doing the layout backdrop shortly and decided to practice by making one for a grain elevator diorama I made previously. Pretty pleased with my first try.

A Surprise!

Last Friday I got wind of NYC cabooses being offered by Tangent.

THIS Friday they're on the layout!

A bit of weathering is in order, soon.

Caboose

Purchased my 1st caboose since about 1975 before I got married. Stopped at Hiawatha Hobbies 8/31/2021 and picked up a Milwaukee Road transfer caboose. This will be stripped and painted into my free lance colors and decaled for The Wisconsin River Valley and Terminal. A Fox Valley model.

@Alex

It's amazing how "modern" a small steam locomotive looks when you place it next to a dirt road and a horse and buggy.  Nice modeling!

@Nick……

……I really love that shot with the control panel lights and the locomotive. Not quite sure why but it gives off a feeling of completeness and craftsmanship.

Three Atlas locomotives.

These were taken in my staging yard.

I have enjoyed Atlas Locomotives for a long time. They are quiet and with the new decoders available they take sound and lighting upgrades very well. I have added details when necessary to make me feel like they are the locomotives I see within a couple miles of me. One of the embellishments that I have fun doing is lighting.

What I want to show you with this picture is a stock GP40-2(W) in the middle, a GP40-2(W) with 0402 warm white LEDs and 2.2K resistors on a Decoder Buddy on the left and a GP28-2 with older 0603 warm white LEDs and 2.2K resistors on a Decoder Buddy on the right. The ditch lights in the GP40-2(W) on the left were reworked to fit the 0402 LEDs into the existing fixtures. The number boards and the low walkway lights on the two outside locomotives are turned off for the comparison.

In the second picture the ditch lights on the locomotive on the left are turned off and the headlight is dimmed to 60% intensity with the decoder.

Enjoy!

Some Bright Lights!

Nick, those lights look very bright (like the real thing).  I also like the color of the LEDs . . . much like incandescent.
