Large operating railroads

An interesting conversation. Brought up the benefits and pitfalls of a large operating model railroad. As the builder/owner of one I agree with what most of the individuals said. It can be an adventure !! --  Ken

Thanks for feedback.

@KeystoneFarm - Sounds like you know first hand how much love and effort a large layout needs.

@Greg - Thanks for the appreciation. Our crew has a variety of skills and knowledge. Some of it even applies to model railroading.

I Just listened...

...while working on my layout. I really enjoyed it. I have agree with the idea "I'm glad they (someone else) built it (a large layout) so I could enjoy operating on it." I have operated on several large layouts and am truly glad I was able to experience them. My around the walls layout in a 11' x 13' bedroom is the right size or me for building and maintaining.

Ken you have figured it out and done well.

One of the mantras we push on the podcast is: build the layout that’s right for you. Sounds like you have done that and can enjoy others large empires as well.

Thank you for the feedback.

Good discussion

I was reminded of a John Allen article from November ’71 NMRA bulletin:  How Large is a …

Mine is 520. Rather small.

Thanks Tom. Mine is a 3120 sq ft multideck PRR/PC Buffalo line. Takes a crew of 32 for full operations. Will celebrate it's 30th birthday this coming February. As I said it's been an adventure. ---  Ken McCorry
