MRH

https://trainmasters.tv - MRH Media founder Joe Fugate interviews the NMRA Santa Clara virtual convention tech team to uncover little-known details about this ground-breaking new kind of hobby event. Prepare to have your eyes opened.

If you think this convention is just the typical live zoom clinics with the occasional technical hickup that we've become accustomed to in the last 18 months, you're totally wrong. This is *SO MUCH MORE* ...

For a unique model railroading event experience, it's just $49 to attend. Starts Tuesday, July 6th. You will be absolutely amazed.

excellent presentation

I thought this was exactly the sort of promotional video that hybrid events are going to need to market themselves successfully.  If the PCRNMRA puts together a slightly shortened version and appends 3-5 minute clips of some of their more visual clinics, I think it will pull in a lot of fence sitters for the next convention.

Out-of-the-box thinking at its best

Frankly, I'm amazed at what this convention committee has done to enable personal interaction at this convention.

Deliberately planning the "Clinic goes on" breakout rooms after the clinic to allow the clinician to interact with interested attendees for an extended Q&A is brilliant. Takes the virtual environment experience well beyond what you get at a live event.

Quote from this video:

Quote:

"One piece of feedback we got from many attendees of the virtual regional convention we held in April is that it was easier to connect with people in the virtual environment than it was at an in-person event. That was a powerful comment."

No kidding. These guys are on to something big.

Availability afterwards

What I wonder is if the content will be available afterwards? Didn't see anything about it on the website.

Live on line is great, but the vast majority of people watch non-live content.  If you look at the virtual meetings on both the NMRAx and the OpSig, there are more views of the You Tube videos than there are attending the live  event.

I won't be "attending" because I have multiple conflicts wit the live presentations.  Trying to coordinate a slot when I am free and content in which I'm interested is being shown is difficult, which doesn't make the $49 fee worthwhile.  On the other hand access to the content later, when I can watch it when I have time, would be something in which I would be interested. The RCT&HS did something similar, held a virtual convention, then later sold copies of the clinics.

One month

Registrants have one month to watch the clinic videos.

The main reason is that hosting terabytes of very high quality video recordings behind a paywall isn't cheap, so they're taking it down after a few weeks. All clinics were pre-recorded and edited into very high quality videos that flow smoothly with no glitches or interruptions.

The even bigger value for the $49 is the ability to interact with clinicians, layout owners, vendors, and hobby leaders literally for hours on end if you want due to the interactive rooms metaphor they're using. This level of access is unheard of at a live convention.

Another great quote

Another great quote from the interview ...

Quote:

"Instead of this being a video you watch for two hours, how can we make this an event you want to attend for 60 hours and stay there?"

And they're using some amazing technology to make it just that kind of online event!

Two hours at a time is likely more attractive to most folks than 60 hours straight.  I'd be more likely to buy long term or permanent access to the content than pay to have to watch it on a scheduled time frame. Folks who go to conventions are more immersed in the subject than the average modeler so likely don't mind spending large chunks of time viewing online, in normal times they spend lots of time and money attending these things in person. If the NMRA wants to increase the exposure to the convention content I think they'd need to make it more universally attractive by allowing more flexible access, time wise and tier wise perhaps......DaveB

@Jackh

Zoom is an independent service. Your basic membership is correct.

To access the convention, all paid registrants receive an email, from “greathall (at) nmra2021.com”,  to your personal address you used when registering, that contains a link to access the convention. When you click that link, it will invoke your Zoom client and connect you to the right place.

If you don’t have an access email from “greathall (at) nmra2021.com”,  to your personal address you used when registering, send an email now to greathall to request access. “Great Hall” is our metaphorical name for the Zoom location everyone starts at. You’ll branch off to clinic track rooms from there.
