I have an Athearn Genesis GP7 that come with a factory installed TSU2 in it. When I turn on the power to the layout, it immediately sounds to life.

Do any of you know what CV # and value I need to change so that you have to select the loco and press a button before the sounds come up?

Plus, if any of you know of an online/downloadable comprehensive list of the CV #'s/etc for a TSU2, I can likely figure some of this out on my own without having to pester this forum.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I just googled and found a list of choices.

The search was SoundTraxx CV list.

Download the manuals

Just go to the Soundtraxx website and download the manuals. THey explain everyting. Also useful are the lists for various important CV's:

Thanks...

Manuals:

I have those, and that's why I'm here asking for an easier to understand explanation. Here's what the manual says:

Quote:

CV 114: Enable Auto-Start
Add a value of 32 to CV 114 to allow the prime mover to start when the decoder receives track power. For DCC operation, the prime mover will not start when the decoder receives track power when auto-start is disabled. For analog mode (DC) operation, the prime mover will start when the decoder receives track power regardless of CV 114. Auto-start is enabled by default.

Either I'm too dumb to see it, or it doesn't say, but I'm not understanding how to disable it. It only talks about adding the feature, and that by "add a value of 32 to CV 114". That sounds like I'll be trying to figure out one of those sequential-type CV values that I have been very unsuccessful attempting to access in the past.

I'm only in Kindergarten when it comes to adjusting CV's.

I do wish they were correct about auto start being disabled by default. Unfortunately, Genesis decided to enable auto-start.

Thanks for trying, though.

OEM manual for Athearn decoder

Well turns out that Athearn OEM decoders use a different CV than the regular Soundtraxx TSU2 decoders. Its actually CV116 for OEM decoders not 114.

This is from the Athearn Decoder User Guide found on page 44.

Quote:

Engine Auto-Start

When active, the Auto-Start feature starts up the prime mover sound automatically whenever the decoder is powered up regardless of whether or not it is addressed by the user. In this manner, the locomotive will begin producing sound without any user intervention. To use the Auto-Start feature, first determine the baseline value for CV 116 based on your choice of manual (setting of 0 or 16) or automatic engine notching (settings 1 through 15). Then to enable auto-start, add 32 to the setting in CV 116.

Example: We want to use automatic notching with a one notch increase for every eight speed steps. From the section under ‘Engine Control’, we determine the base setting for CV 116 to be 8. Then to enable Auto-Start, we add 32. Thus, CV 116 is set to: CV 116 = 8 + 32 = 40.

So if you set CV 116 to a value between 1 and 15 it should not start up until you select the locomotive. So something like 1 notch for every 7 steps is pretty typical. If you set CV 116 to value a of 7 you should get automatic notching engaged and prime mover shouldn't engage until you select the loco. If you want manual notching only, then set CV 116 to zero.

Thanks Joe.

Given my ability to klutz CV stuff... I am SO GLAD I didn't tackle the instructions in the standard TSU2 manual. No telling what I would have garbled!

So you think I need to select CV #116, then set the value to 7 and that ought to do it? Did I understand you correctly?

Yep

Yep, that's it exactly if you want auto-notching every 7 speed steps.

If you prefer manual notching using function keys, then set it to zero.

If you want something else for auto-notching, then you can try 1-6 for more frequent auto-notching, or 8-15 for less frequent auto-notching.

Thanks again, Joe!

I'm currently knee deep in a layout revision, but once up and going again, I will revisit this thread and try to apply the fix. I will, of course, have my fingers crossed for good measure.

As always, take notes!

My son is new to DCC programming.  This is the crucial part of reprogramming a decoder: Know what you Had and know where you're going.  There's no better roadmap than copious notes. His first adventure was a bit frustrating.

And it's certainly frustrating to know that NMRA can't dictate how manufacturers maintain their CVs.  I recently has a decoder reset on CV 125... what's That about?

Hi Peter!

Notes: Oh yes, notes.

Each engine has a hard copy file card with it's CV and values that I've changed thereon. Handy reference when it's time to adjust a new engine's momentum/etc.

Like I said, I am "functionally" literate with CV's and values... but I truly need data (CV sheets/etc), and, there are some realms I've just not been successful at, like indexed CV's.

Very basic. Like I said, I'm in DCC Kindergarten.

BUT... that's better than still messing in my DCC diapers!
