Some options

Hi Phil.

These could take some tracking down but they are out there. First have a look at  Front End Loader for scrap yard | Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine (model-railroad-hobbyist.com)

The Kibri Wheel Loader mentioned was probably a Faun

https://www.rocousa.com/Kibri_18453_FAUN_Wheel_Loader_Kit (paint it yrllow and no-one will be any the wiser  )

Kibri also do a tracked Leibherr loader -

https://www.rocousa.com/Kibri_15205_Liebherr_631_Front_End_Loader_Kit

Schuco do a Leibherr front-end loader equivalent -

https://www.rocousa.com/Schuco_452652900_Liebherr_Radlader_550_BW -

Not mentioned in that thread is

Herpa kit #6952 (which gets you a low loader as well  )

There are also 1/87 Norscot (read highly detailed diecast) that look like they are available from Western Australia. The HO range is at

https://www.catmodels.com/products/ho-railway-scale-models/ with these:
  • Cat 966M -
  • Cat Diecast 966M Wheel Loader 85948 1:87 Scale - Catmodels.com
  • Cat 972M -
  • Cat Diecast 972M Wheel Loader 85949 1:87 Scale - Catmodels.com
  • 1/64 Cat 988H -
  • Cat Diecast 1:64 988H Wheel Loader 85617 - Catmodels.com (if you want a real BEAST of a front-end loader in HO

With a bit of luck the Norscot CAT's might be available through the NZ Cat distributor.

Later edit the Cararama Volvo looks like it might be available close to you - see

https://minikiwilandshop.co.nz/product-list.php?&scale=1%3A87&brand=Cararama&stock=Y and you get a "free" low-loader.

Regards,

John Garaty

If you are modeling 60's or 70's the most common models would be

American made.  I think Cat, John Deere, International Harvester.  Perhaps Ford, I don't know how many others may have been making equipment for the construction industry or farming.  Sometime after 2000, I think many of the European and Japanese equipment began to be imported as well as the American companies still in production.  International Harvester changed the name on their trucks to Navistar I think in the 90's but I think off road construction or farming equipment may have continued under the International Harvester label.

And based upon my library of American equipment sales brochures, LeTourneau/Westinghouse/Komatsu/WABCO, Euclid/Terex, Clark-MIchigan-Hancock, Massey Ferguson, Case, Allis Chalmers, Allis Fiat, Davis, Owatonna, Carco...and I know I still missed a few...

Thank you everyone for the great links. Will give me a solid few hours to go thru. Do appreciate everyone's time in searching out links.

Have narrowed it done to a few models

1982 Cat 950B

1989 Cat 926E

or even a Cat 1970 950

"Official" replicas are made

"Official" replicas are made by Diecast Masters.  They were formally made by Trucks N Stuff.  I was lucky enough to get one of those at Kleins for half price at the beginning of the year as they were getting rid of the old stock.  I don't know if you can still get the older ones but it is worth looking.  The slight difference in the models wasn't worth the extra cost to me.

I have that one.  I'm amazed at the detail and die cast construction for the price.

60s-70s Loader

For a “vintage” front end loader, take a look at the Sheepscot Scale Products model of a Michigan 375, now available thru Gandy Dancer Hobbies https://www.gandydancerhobbies.com/product/michigan-375-loader/

It is a urethane model, so requires building, and is perhaps not as detailed as the newer die cast models, but it fits my era better than others I have been able to find.  Open cab with no cage around the driver either.

International Harvester Construction Equipment Division

Was changed to International Hough (Hough was the original company that manufactured tired front end loaders), then sold to Dresser, and then to Komatsu in late 80's. I was there for most of it in a very short period of time. I still have and use a thermal vest with the International Hough patch on it!
