This is how I created a model of the Illinois Terminal Depot in Monticello, Illinois.

The process...

The Illinois Traction System, later to become the Illinois Terminal Railroad, came up with a standard depot design that was built in several towns across central Illinois.  One of those is a single story depot as is found in Litchfield, Monticello, and several other places.  Here is picture of the Monticello Depot.

On researching the ITS, I discovered an old article that had the building dimensions of this depot as shown below.

I created a 3D design using SketchUP and uploaded those designs to Shapeways and had the parts printed in Fine Detail Plastic.

I used Gorilla Super Glue to glue the four walls together (they were beveled at a 45 degree angle) and used some square styrene to brace them. I then primed it gray.

I created a styrene sub roof structure using the appropriate pitch of the roof. I covered this skeleton with 0.010 styrene skin.

I then used some HO Scale Spanish tile to recreate the roof.  I spray painted it the appropriate colors.

I am contemplating its final spot on my layout.  I wan't planning on using this on my layout but it turned out so well, that it would be hard not to use it.  I still have some final work to do such as some paint touch ups and I want to do a mortar wash and add gutters and downspouts.

Thanks

Thanks to all for the kind complements.  This was a "trial run" as I wanted to do something smaller before I tackled the two story combination depot substation that the Illinois Terminal (Illinois Traction) had.  I found this to be very successful so I have started on the design of the two story building.

Well done.

Nicely put together. That tile roof is unique.

Finished

I have "finished" the station.  I will add gutters, benches, etc. when I finalize it on the layout.  I hope also to add some interior lighting, but we shall see.  I used an India ink wash to highlight the mortar lines and then spayed on a dull coat.  I added clear styrene as window glass.
