I noticed it at Walmart the other night, so bought a copy.

It’s a new publication, a “Best Of” based on a collection of previously published articles plus some new tips and techniques (like putting a layer of tempered glass over the grid of a self healing cutting board when glueing parts so as to not wreck the board),

Lots of insight into the workings of these industries, flow of inputs and outputs, switching them, some track plans, etc.  A very useful reference book, IMHO.

Hope it's ok to post it here.  Thought members might enjoy knowing if they haven't already seen it.

If a magazine putting out compilations clearly labels that

If the magazine clearly states that it's a compilation of previously published articles, I've got no gripe with it.  It gives newcomers a shot at some great stuff that long-time readers already have.  All good.

My only complaint is when it's not clearly labelled - and it's presented as a "Special Issue", leading people to believe it's new material, when it's not.

Just me, probably, but I dislike buying a collection of articles that I already own with no new material other than the editorial introduction.

Walmart

I've noticed an occasional MR issue or special like this at my local store. It really surprised me because, all the local grocery/general retail stores in my area have significantly pared down their magazine sections over the past several years and hobby mags are hard to find now. Problem is that it's still hit or miss for them to have anything. I looked just the other day and nothing. I'll have to keep an eye for this one and give it a look.

My best option for any sort of print magazines is Barnes and Noble but unfortunately, that's about 100 miles round trip so really need to be going that way for something else.

Compilations

The referenced publication looks interesting.  But, I agree with Janet N:  Compilations should clearly be labelled as such.

It is clearly labelled as such ...

It’s right on the cover, and right on the first page.

Best of

Those two words in the title tell you it is a compilation of articles.

Yes, this one is clearly labelled, but...

Others in the past have not, being labelled only as "Special Issue".  Some of those "Special Issues" were all new material; some were a mix of new and old. Some were just old stuff collected and repackaged. You had to open it up and flip through the table of contents to see that a significant number, if not all, were republished articles.

Yes, "Best of" is a clue, as is a smaller headline "previously published in...",  and as I said, I've got no gripe if they ARE clearly labelled.  Not everyone has access to a huge back catalog of old issues, not everyone wants to sign up for an unending series of subscriptions.  There is clearly a place for these collections.  I just want them to be clearly labelled so I don't have to rifle through a copy on the stand.

Not a big deal.

Okay....

We've now determined that it's a compilation of previously published articles, and it is noted as such.

Anyone want to talk about what's in it?

Looking at the T of C photo the only article I remember seeing are the pair on the meat industry.

So my question is, are the original publication dates mentioned maybe in the article itself?

Fortunately my B&N is pretty close.

The issue with Walmart is what they carry is driven by the number of sales vs how many they have to buy. This is true for everything in the store and not just magazines.

....

I went looking for this on Amazon and found out that the cover itself is a direct lift from their own July 2016 issue.

It may be worth picking up as a shortcut.

Looks like mostly reprints

The cover is a reprint and some of the articles are clearly reprints. I don't see any "from the pages of" notation on the front cover, however, which makes it a bit misleading. What has been posted (cover, toc) is fine, but don't post any more from the inside please. Looks like a handy compilation.

No, I don’t see any references to the original dates of the articles. IMHO they made some good picks in their selections.  Lots of great scale drawings of the structures as well.

No worries Joe ...

That was all I was going to post.  I had only posted the cover initially, but then the questions prompted me to add the TOC. so people could form their own opinions rather than rely on mine.

I haven’t found an article yet in it that isn’t useful to me in some way.

Kalmbooks

The always-original and very useful books that emanate from Waukesha are the well-researched and well-illustrated "Guide to Industries" series that Jeff Wilson writes.  Not excessively deep, but always 100 or so pages of fairly good information. Two of them cover "Produce Traffic & Trains" and "Grain."

Compilations, no bonus article

.

I have this book

I confirm it only contains articles which were published earlier in MR

If it's not clearly say it's a compilations book and not also say they are new articles inside; but I really like these compilations books of MR; they are useful and give a quick survey about industry modeling in this case.

But this book is like many others published by Kalmbach/MR which are also compilations of old articles; no really new shot here.

If you follow Kalmbach publications and the MR stuff, these kinds of compilations books comes time to time regularly  about different subjects; generally no bonus article.

I know it, because  I think I have all of them which are already published.

Find them extremely useful and handy; don't need to make archeologic research in my MR magazines collection even if now it exist a full library of MR articles, if I need info's about a particular subject.

This book compilations seems to be, as an estimation, of around the seven last years published articles about industry modeling in MR and all in one "files" with lot of pictures.

I can also take it outside with a cup of coffee and read it under some sun ( rare by these time !)
