Peco static grass not working.

It keeps clumping up and won't go through screen of grass applicator.

Try to un clump it in the coffee grinder and it still clumps up.

IMG_0533.JPG

Break it up with fingers and it still clumps up in grass applicator.

Put a little rock in the grass applicator and it still clumps up and won't go through the screen.

However, the NOCH grass doesn't clump and falls through the screen like powder through a sifter.

Never getting this product again and will order some new lighter NOCH colours so I can blend.

what a drag!

That stuff looks more like carpet fibers than static grass. Thanks for the heads up.

Rick, stay away from it.  I

Rick, stay away from it.  I had to shake the static applicator twenty times longer vigorously just to get our a fraction of what I can get out in seconds using NOCH.

Peco static grass

How long are those fibers from the Peco static grass? Same length as your Noch static grass? If longer than the Noch static grass you might need to switch to a mesh with larger holes for them to come out easier. That is why the Noch and Woodkand Scenic static grass machines come with different mesh screens.

Yaron, I did know about the

Yaron,

I did know about the different meshes.

The NOCH and Peco I'm using is 6mm. If I blend them only the NOCH gets through the mesh.

Maybe I can make a custom mesh for the Peco grass?

6mm static grass length

If both static grasses are the same length you'd think they should behave the same. It doesn't make sense that one would make it through the mesh while the other doesn't. Unless the fibers are of differ materials that behave differently to static charge. Trying a larger mesh opening for the Peco is worth the try, but beyond that my only other thought would be a potential difference in humidity between the two, with the Peco being more humid. Perhaps leaving the Peco in a closed bag with a few packets of silica gel could reduce the humidity?

peco grass

What if something happened to the peco grass to make it clump before you put it in the applicator. Maybe it got damp or something? Or maybe that grass already got a charge somehow and the pieces are attracted to each other?

Just speculating.

Just for a reference, what's the clumping compared to say Silflor? Which has a tendency to clump as well...though I've never had a problem getting it out.

A mystery indeed. When I pull the clumps apart and put them in a tub or on a piece of paper it just forms into clumps again. My place has a low humidity, maybe they need humindity?

Humidity

Remember how, in the winter with low humidity, if you walked across a rug and then touched a light switch you’d get a shock?  I suspect a similar phenomenon is happening with your grass, and you need more humidity to reduce the ambient static charge the grass picks up from your handling of it.  Try very lightly misting it with wet water and see if that improves it?

discharging grass

If the grass has its own static charge causing the clumps, maybe dump the clumps out on aluminum foil and spread them out with your hands on that, touching the aluminum foil repeatedly to even the charge between it and yourself, and touch something grounded to dissipate any charge on yourself.

Agree with EW

It sounds like the charge difference between the screen of your applicator and ground is too small to overcome the static attraction of these fibers to one another as they sit in the cup. Perhaps Peco is expecting its fiber product to be used with an applicator that generates a higher voltage charge.

patentwriter,  I suspect this

patentwriter,

I suspect this is the case with Peco.

I managed to undo the clumps and mixed it with NOCH grass. I put it all in my applicator and only the NOCH went through the screen and the lighter coloured Peco stayed in the applicator and formed in clumps.

My last suggestion would be to use the Peco clumps for bushes

Maybe try folding a dryer

Maybe try folding a dryer sheet in half, putting some clumps in and then rubbing the halves together while letting the grass sift back out into a container. Just a shot in the dark...
